MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the 4th Annual Stay Strong Volleyball Tournament. It's all happening on Saturday, September 14th at The Beach at Sharkey's to raise money for American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - Greater Central NY Chapter. As you may know, I’ve struggled with my mental health for most of my life. When I was an international student advisor for a few years, I talked many students through difficult situations, particularly those where mental health was a taboo topic back home. But the most critical moment when I realized I needed to do more was when my brother-in-law took his own life in August of 2020. Since then I have dedicated my time to advocating, educating, and fundraising for mental health awareness and suicide prevention through the AFSP. The more I've volunteered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the more I've spoken up about mental health, the more I’ve learned just how many people are affected by suicide. In September 2021, I began the STAY STRONG Volleyball Tournament for exactly this reason. “Stay Strong” comes from famous BMX rider Dave Mirra, my husband’s cousin, who also took his own life in February 2016. The tournament invites beach volleyball players of all levels to come out to play at Sharkey’s. But the event is more than just volleyball. It’s community. It’s education. It’s awareness. It’s the support of people coping with their own losses and mental health struggles. In addition to the tournament, there will be live music, raffles baskets, drink specials, and information from local mental health organizations. Nothing beats a great speakeasy, and @thewoowoonyc is on point! The Woo Woo was the first of 3 speakeasies we visited on a recent tour, and it’s based off of 1980s $3X clubs. It definitely made my straight-laced personality feel a little naughty! The cocktails were phenomenal - I highly recommend the Purple Rain - and the vibes were awesome (Beetlejuice was playing on one of the tvs). Check it out next time you’re in NYC! Did someone say Caturday? How appropriate that a week ago today I was exploring the village of Catskill, on a hunt to find all 70 of this year’s cat statues. Yes, 70. These ones were my favorite! So why are there so many cats? Every year, the village creates a group of fiberglass cat statues that local artists design while local businesses sponsor them as they are placed around Catskill. The cats are on display from Memorial Day through Labor Day before they are auctioned off. A portion of the money goes to the artists, but the majority of the money supports local charities and community projects. Go check out the cats before they are gone in September! I’ve always been a fan of American history, so when Hamilton first came out I was very excited to combine my love of history with my love of musicals. Needless to say, once I watched it, I wanted to visit many of the places mentioned in it. Fast forward to last week when I visited the Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site in Albany. Our tour guide was fantastic and gave us so much interesting information about the history of the house and the Schuyler family. Like the fact that Elizabeth Schuyler and Alexander Hamilton were the only of the Schuyler children to get married in the family house. (The first picture is the parlor where they were married.) And only 8 of the 15 children that Philip and Catherine had survived to adulthood. After Philip Schuyler died, the estate was split up and the home was eventually home to Caroline Carmichael and was the site of her wedding to former US President Millard Fillmore. Later it became an orphanage before becoming a museum 1917. Guided tours of the museum are just $5.
