Time for another luxury upstate stay, perfect for a girls’ night and a couple’s getaway. Located in the heart of Trumansburg, @the16elm is a beautiful historic home with 6 luxury suites. My friend and I had the pleasure of staying there after indulging in all of the delicious food at @tasteoftheflx. Originally built in 1921 by the Biggs family, the house was modeled after the Governor of Virginia’s Williamsburg home. Over the past century, several different owners have lived at the property with their families. When the home celebrated its centennial just a few years ago, the property changed hands once again - this time to its current owner, Jes Seaver. Following up on the efforts of the previous owners who had been restoring the property to turn it into a bed & breakfast, Jes added her own luxury touches. Guests staying at 16 Elm can explore the common rooms of the house, admiring the antique furnishings and unique architecture. An honor bar and record collection await guests in the library. In the sun room, there is a coffee station featuring the unique frozen coffee pods from @cometeer. Outside, the gardens are truly a sight to behold, with the fountain as a focal point in the front lawn. The guest rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated. I loved the light turquoise tiles in the bathroom, providing a spa-like feel along with toiletries from @beekman1802. Our guest room also had a large free-standing bath tub, perfect for a relaxing soak after a long day. The village is just down the street, so guests can walk to the quaint shops and restaurants. What a night! In my second year volunteering for @syracusezoo’s #BrewAtTheZoo I got the prime location - in front of the #eletwins! The most popular inhabitants of our zoo by far. (Yes, I even had some folks say they came from Atlanta to see the twins.) When the forecast called for rain, I jumped in line to sign up for the perfect spot - somewhere I could see the elephants, have a bit of overhead coverage, and represent an excellent brewery. So I got to pour two phenomenal IPAs from @industrialartsbrewing all night while the canopies lessened the rain pouring down on us. But yes, I was still drenched when I got home. But no matter the weather, we had a blast! Thanks to everyone who came out to say hello. And to the women who told me that I’ve introduced them to so many things to do - and I’m the reason they get a babysitter on the weekends - you made my night! Head to Constantia to visit @gracetylerestatewinery, located on the northern shore of Oneida Lake. The family-owned winery was established in 2018 and produces wines from the grapes grown right on their property. They specialize in Marquette, Diamond, and Brianna varietals. Go for the wine, stay for the chocolate labs! Annabelle and Ozzy will be excited to greet you when you visit. MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the 4th Annual Stay Strong Volleyball Tournament. It's all happening on Saturday, September 14th at @sharkeysbarandgrill to raise money for @afsp_centralny As you may know, I’ve struggled with my mental health for most of my life. When I was an international student advisor for a few years, I talked many students through difficult situations, particularly those where mental health was a taboo topic back home. But the most critical moment when I realized I needed to do more was when my brother-in-law took his own life in August of 2020. Since then I have dedicated my time to advocating, educating, and fundraising for mental health awareness and suicide prevention through the AFSP. The more I've volunteered with the @afspnational and the more I've spoken up about mental health, the more I’ve learned just how many people are affected by suicide. So in September 2021, I began the STAY STRONG Volleyball Tournament, named in honor of BMX legend @davemirra, my husband’s cousin, who also took his own life in 2016. The tournament invites beach volleyball players of all levels to come out to play at Sharkey’s. But the event is more than just volleyball. It’s community. It’s education. It’s awareness. It’s the support of people coping with their own losses and mental health struggles. In addition to the tournament, there will be live music, raffle baskets, drink specials, and information from local mental health organizations. Did someone say Caturday? How appropriate that a week ago today I was exploring the village of Catskill, on a hunt to find all 70 of this year’s cat statues. Yes, 70. These ones were my favorite! So why are there so many cats? Every year, the village creates a group of fiberglass cat statues that local artists design while local businesses sponsor them as they are placed around Catskill. The cats are on display from Memorial Day through Labor Day before they are auctioned off. A portion of the money goes to the artists, but the majority of the money supports local charities and community projects. Go check out the cats before they are gone in September! I’ve always been a fan of American history, so when Hamilton first came out I was very excited to combine my love of history with my love of musicals. Needless to say, once I watched it, I wanted to visit many of the places mentioned in it. Fast forward to last week when I visited the @schuylermansion in Albany. Our tour guide was fantastic and gave us so much interesting information about the history of the house and the Schuyler family. Like the fact that Elizabeth Schuyler and Alexander Hamilton were the only of the Schuyler children to get married in the family house. (The first picture is the parlor where they were married.) And only 8 of the 15 children that Philip and Catherine had survived to adulthood. After Philip Schuyler died, the estate was split up and the home was eventually home to Caroline Carmichael and was the site of her wedding to former US President Millard Fillmore. Later it became an orphanage before becoming a museum 1917.
