Another beautiful Ledaig to add to the collection. This distillery-only single cask release is 11 years old, finished in virgin oak, and bottled at cask strength of 55.8% abv. This is one of the best Ledaig I’ve had. I was pretty shocked trying this, because I LOVE Ledaig in sherry. But this? This is another level of crazy. Butterscotch-y bourbon notes, warm toffee and honey completely coat the mouth, all with that unmistakeable funky peaty malt doing the heavy lifting. Exquisite. It will be hard to top this one in 2023 for me. Happy Saturday! Last night was a fantastic sherried side-by-side at our house. I totally fell in love with the 2022 @bunnahabhain 12 year Cask Strength release, so when I saw this @adrattray Bunna 12 year cask strength, I had to buy it. While these are both unpeated cask strength 12 year whiskies, there are a few differences. The OB is batched, bottled in 2022, and has a natural cask strength of 56.6% abv. The A.D. Rattray is a single cask, bottled in 2021, matured fully in sherry, with a natural cask strength of 67.3% abv - and that color!!! You all know I don’t give serious notes, but here are my impressions. The OB is sweeter, creamier, softer, a touch spicy, and has a distinct honey note (comparatively) with a shorter finish. The IB has a great bbq pork note, heavy plum, raisin, and black currant influences, tobacco, leather, and a very long finish with a touch of menthol and zero funk. Both are sherry forward, but the Rattray is even more so. This single cask bottle is amazing. We had a good laugh at how similar, dissimilar, and delicious these bottles are. I truly love them both, but the sharper edges on the IB won me over, at least for tonight. Are you a fan of wine cask finishing? I am! One that we don’t get to see very often is the elusive Amarone cask finish. Amarone, which literally means “great bitter”, is a rich Italian red wine known for its strong flavor and high alcohol content. There’s a couple good whiskies out there that are relatively easy to get your hands on if you want to try an Amarone finished whisky, but this wine doesn’t always play well with others. This is the Ledaig 12 year old Amarone cask finish. This dram spent 18 months in Amarone wine casks before being bottled at cask strength of 57.5% abv.
