Global Citizen’s #TogetherAtHome concert series is raising funds for the World Health Organization with live Instagram performances by Vance Joy, Ziggy Marley, John Legend, Chris Martin, Charlie Puth, and OneRepublic (so far). Diplo is live streaming a DJ set from his living room every night, paying homage to the legendary Hollertronix parties of his earlier career by doing a “Ronatronix” set made up of the house music he’s been spinning via his Higher Ground label, along with tracks from such varied artists as Billie Eilish, Busta Rhymes, New Order, and Enya. Until then, I’ll tune into their online music program, La Bella Musica di Monteverdi featuring musical performances recorded from the homes of the internationally acclaimed, award-winning musicians and singers, many of whom have performed at Monteverdi’s Chiesa di Sant’Andrea, the restored 700-year-old Romanesque gem of a church. NPR Music’s Tiny Desk concert series features informal live performances at the desk of All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen in Washington, D.C., with artists including Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Coldplay, Bob Weir and Wolf Bros, The Black Crowes, and Harry Styles jamming out in the makeshift studio.
A young Meryl Streep, perfectly draped in neutrals, plays a young Danish coffee plantation owner in 20th-century colonial Kenya who has a passionate love affair with a free-spirited, big-game hunter played by Robert Redford (also in matching neutrals). Acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog travels to Antarctica, where he finds a desolate, beautiful landscape largely untouched by human hands and a group of unique people willing to abandon civilization and risk their lives to study it. A biographical drama based on Jon Krakauer’s book about Christopher McCandless, a top student who drops out of university, donates his savings, and heads alone into the spectacular, unforgiving Alaskan wilderness. A 1997 film based on the book by Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer (portrayed by Brad Pitt) on his experiences in Tibet during World War II.
Here’s another check-in from our pal Erica Firpo in Rome, who is finding fresh ways to explore Italy during the Covid-19 crisis. Italy’s Ministry of Culture MiBACt has aggregated virtual and online cultural initiatives, divided into categories: books/libraries, education, museums, music, cinema, and theater. When I want to stay local, I skip over to the Vatican Museums for their six, 360-degree virtual tours, including the Raphael Room and the Sistine Chapel, which are never this empty. Musei in Comune, Rome’s museum circuit, has five virtual tours of my favorite museums: Musei Capitolini, Trajan’s Market, Ara Pacis, Museo Napoleonico, and Villa Torlonia’s Casino Nobile.
“Lincoln Center is excited to share Lincoln Center at Home, which we hope will help bolster the tremendous work being done by parents and educators right now to help kids keep learning,” said Henry Timms, President & CEO of Lincoln Center. From the Pop-Up Classroom that our teaching artists and education colleagues will broadcast each day to live, ‘homemade’ performances by some of our family of artists, to our trove of legendary performance footage across Lincoln Center’s many institutions, we hope Lincoln Center at Home will provide families across the country with creative solutions to the difficult moments that we’re all experiencing together. Led by some of the world’s best artists and educators, each creative learning activity utilizes simple materials found at home to help families with children explore a variety of art forms. From the archives of Lincoln Center’s resident organizations comes a trove of video, including rarely seen footage from decades of Live From Lincoln Center, more recent performances from across campus, and live streams from wherever performances are still happening – empty halls, living rooms, and more.
