Sophie’s journey started with a VERY restrictive phase when she first got into fitness. She lost weight, and constantly being active 🏋🏼♀️ and eating a meticulous diet 🥦 became her norm. Throw me a 💪 if chinups make you feel like an absolute badass⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Today I’m going to tell you about how an exercise break helped me later hit a chinup PR and build muscle and how YOU CAN TOO . . Before I went through this journey of stopping binge eating and getting my period back without the pill 💊 - my chin-ups were stagnant. I felt stuck in the cycle of trying to lose fat & then bingeing and my strength & muscle building suffered because of it. What will REALLY happen if you let yourself eat whatever you want 👇🏻⠀ .⠀ .⠀ If you told me years ago that the key to finally overcoming my binge eating was to eat whatever I wanted for a while...I would tell you you were crazy 🤪. But through my own binge recovery and work as a Registered Dietitian, I’ve found that the body is FREAKING SMART. Hands up 🙌🏻 if you agree⠀ .⠀ .⠀ For so many years I thought bingeing was a character flaw, a bad habit I needed to break, something I might have to live with for the rest of my life and just figure out a way to have more self-control so I could reach my physique goals and be happy. I didn’t but the pieces together that my lost period and bingeing were related. And so many of my clients don’t until they come to me, either 😢.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ I lost my period in the beginning of my fitness journey when all I did was run 🏃🏼♀️ and eat as little calories as possible. I saw that as my “restrictive phase” - but once I started eating a bit more, lifting, and flexible dieting 🏋🏼♀️ I thought I was over that. By then I was on the pill💊 to “regulate my cycle” (as my OBGYN put it) and I basically forgot about it 🤷🏼♀️. It wasn’t till I graduated college, was in the midst of a cut and STILL having massive, all out binges at least once per week after spending my entire college career trying to stop bingeing - that I decided enough was enough. I was done being consumed by food, my health was spiraling downwards, and I didn’t want to be on the pill anymore. Can you relate??⠀ .⠀ .⠀ I realized the root cause of my bingeing was restriction, not a bad habit or something inherently wrong with me. And everything clicked. That’s why I couldn’t get my period without the pill, that’s why I had nutrient deficencies and low blood pressure, THAT’s why my digestion sucked. I started learning where I was still restricting, breaking 🙅♀️ those rules, and for the first time in my lifr TRULY giving myself unconditional permission to eat...and guess what?!? That binges stopped and I got my period back naturally! 3 years later, I still pinch myself sometimes that I’m able to cut/bulk, lift and build my body in the way I love without bingeing or living a life obsessed with food. Hands up 🙌🏻 for taking proper rest! . . As lifters, we are well aware of the need for proper rest from the gym to recover and prepare for next session 🏋🏼♀️. But when we are on the pill 💊 for a missing period, dealing with bingeing and have a past history of restriction/overexercise - we often underestimate our need for rest 😬. Taking a break from structured exercise allows our body the time and space to heal, repair and come back to the gym ready to crush some weight and hit physique goals without bingeing or obsession 😍. If you’re like my clients, you’re NOT 🙅♀️trying to get pregnant right now (hello finishing school and learning how to be an adult 👩🏼🏫), but you have a feeling not being able to get a period is not healthy 🤔. And I am here to confirm your suspicions - IT’S NOT. Many doctor’s will tell you that losing your period is normal for fit women, and recommend you take the pill 💊 to regulate - until you want to get pregnant when you can get off and explore “other options” (ahem, more medication 🤫). Hands up 🙌 if you’re ready to STOP comparing yourself to IG fitspos⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀ A lot of these women, and the body standards in the fitness industry 🏋🏼♀️ in general, don’t carry the minimum body fat (20-22%) that the average woman would need to maintain a healthy menstrual cycle *without the pill* 🤯.⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ Before I overcame bingeing and got my period back without the pill 💊, I used to fall into the comparison trap CONSTANTLY. I would hop on the explore page of IG & before I knew it I was in DEEP into photos & workout vids 🏋🏼♀️ from fitspos. A part of me knew it was silly, but after just a few minutes of that I would already be thinking about how I could change my nutrition & training to look more like them 🤔. I would think - “how do they do this without bingeing or struggling with hormonal issues? Whats wrong with me?!” I thought about my struggles with food and felt even more hopeless and lost 😔. I talk all the time about how a calorie deficit and restriction around food causes bingeing - but did you know too much exercise can make it harder to break free from the urge to binge too 😱? For this reason (and more I won’t go into right now) - TWN🏋🏼♀️ Group Program asks you to take a break from structured exercise and focus on gentle movement while you heal your relationship with food and get your period back without the pill 💪💊. But none of this is healthy, and the body knows! So it starts sending you strong, unresistable urges to eat so it can have the energy to work normally again and feel safe ❤️. . . The solution? YES, eat more. But also - rest more and conserve that precious energy for healing your relationship with food and your body, girl!!
