Throwback to the reason all this quarantine drama is happening in the first place: I wanted to climb mountains 😂 More specifically, I wanted to see Everest Base Camp with my own eyes. One of the most epic adventures I’d have. Well, it’s been an adventure alright. From mountaineering to horse & helicopter rescues, to a COVID-19 lockdown, a chartered rescue plane and now- the quarantine center. Our days are unscheduled & evolve around 3 things: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Once food has been left outside our doors, they ring the doorbell and RUN. Then we emerge to grab our food and eat. No moving outside the room. No exploring. No interacting. Even if you’re married, you each get a separate room. But we also get daily calls from the Ministry of Health asking how we’re doing; if we’re developing any symptoms. Today we got a potent hand sanitiser & a stick-on thermometer as we are meant to measure our body temperatures daily & report back. Tomorrow, another nose swab 😭😔🥺 If you’ve never had one before, I pray you never do. It’s the equivalent of a very long stick being stuffed into your nose so far it’s as though it’s hitting the back of your throat 😳 On the bright side, deliveries!!! So what happens when you fly during this COVID-19 season? For one thing, we were the only plane to land in KLIA! It was so surreal walking through the abandoned KLIA. Every shop is closed indefinitely. Every flight cancelled. The Aerotrain shut, so we had to take the bus. You’ve probably seen photos of all those planes parked in airports around the world. This is true in KLIA too. And not forgetting - Personnel from the army and Royal Malaysian Police Force everywhere! Everything was different. Body temperature checks. Near the immigration counter, a long line we had to walk before arriving at a set of tables for us to complete our health details. And be given another form to fill over the next 14 days detailing our health. Once done, it was onwards through immigration before having to wait. And have the head of the family complete a form. We then waited until the first 16 pax of people had collected their bags before we split into 2 lines. Once the group ahead of us had exited, we went to the bag collection point. By now, all the bags were already out. Then another short period of waiting to make sure everyone in our little group was ready to go. We then exited the terminal. Again a scene overflowing with police & army personnel & ambulances! A whole line of specially chartered buses awaited. Ready to bring us to our next destination. The quarantine centres! Anddd we flew off! From Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur; the ONLY plane flying in that airspace today. Which was pretty amazing. Probably one of the few people in the WORLD who got to travel such long distances today - a 4 hours 50 minutes flight! The streets of Kathmandu were empty but full of intermittent postings of policemen. The Kathmandu Airport was packed packed packed!! So many people waiting for their chartered rescue planes. Saw two airport souvenir shops open for business. Because they’re clearly “essential services”! The 1st flight that took off was by @qatarairways (they’re so active!) with the Germans who were heading to Doha before transiting to Frankfurt. Once they left, the airport departure hall became so empty! Next up was us. Probably the quickest takeoff I’ve ever experienced. Since there weren’t any other flights scheduled today 😂 except for a third one. On board @malindoair, we were each given a plastic bag filled with biscuits, a mineral water bottle, a milo packet and Maggie Cup (kari). Sooo Malaysian! Nothing was served on the flight except hot water. And of course, plenty of health and safety briefings. And a reminder that all Malaysians returning now will be sent to a quarantine center for 14 days... 2nd fun fact: no passenger was allowed to sit side by side. There always has to be an empty seat between us. Final fun fact: the SKY. In all my airplane travels I don’t recall the sky being so beautiful. The burning sunset as we landed, and the way it lit up against the sea and hills... 🌇 Just received word that @malindoair @malaysiaairlines will be rescuing us trapped Malaysians in Nepal! Which makes this sunset in Kathmandu so poignant. There are many things that I’ve fallen in love with in this country. Yesterday I talked about the people but today... these views. That sunset. need I say more? Kathmandu is a valley so if you’re high up enough, you will see these HILLS surrounding the city, 360 degrees. And I say hills because for the Nepali: Hill: Anything <6000m Peak: 6000m < x < 7000m Mountain: Anything >7000m They have pretty high standards 😂 I’m going to miss these hills. The mountains I saw while hiking to Everest Base Camp. I never got to see some of the famed sights in Kathmandu itself (let alone the rest of the country!), which only means that I’ll be back! But for now, home. An extensive health screening at the airport (despite having been in near total isolation for 2 weeks here, sigh) and... straight to a 2 week stint in the newly established quarantine center in who-knows-where 😂😢😭 My adventure is still not over! Quick on-the-ground news update: In a country like Nepal, COVID-19 is having a devastating effect that I haven’t seen covered on the news. I don’t say this to take attention away from what’s happening globally, definitely not! But because I’m here. And I’m hearing from the locals themselves on what’s happening Firstly, all Everest summit expeditions have been cancelled. I was part of the final group of trekkers allowed to hike up to Everest Base Camp. Just last week, all trekkers were told to return to Lukla. The trekkers furthest along the route then were at Dingboche (4400m). There are “only” 5 positive cases in Nepal and 1 death to date but that is 5 too many. The Nepali government know they can’t cope with any outbreak at all, hence the immediate and absolute lockdown on movement. This overnight decision has resulted in hundreds of hikers being stuck on the mountains for over a week - my group even made it into the news via @thestaronline 😱 We are staying indoors until perhaps when the lockdown is lifted on 15 April. Mountain trekking guides and porters have said that they will have no income for 6 months at least. The tea houses will have no business for months. Even when we were at Namche, there was barely any movement. All tea houses apart from ours was closed. Small businesses doing great social impact work like @kolpaworld are impacted, because everyone is now focused on spending just on the essentials. The daily wagers (of which there are many) are stuck indoors, terrified. People with no way of earning an income when they can’t go outside. The hospitality industry where hotels have been ordered to shut. To no longer take any more guests. Life on the streets of Kathmandu. There are no beggars here. I’m told that the people here have too much pride and dignity to be doing any begging on the streets. But it is not the richest country out there either. And that becomes quickly evident through a quick stroll along the streets. Many streets are untiled or full of soil or haphazard stacks of bricks laid on the ground. Even in “posher” places like Jhamsikhel where all the consulates and international restaurants are, don’t expect anything all that different. But you know what has touched me the most? The people. One of the sweetest, most helpful people I’ve ever come across. They struggle with English but you can tell that they always go out of their way to help you, language barrier or not. So if you’re solo female traveller, worry not. You’re as safe as safe can be. 😊 (Although they might stare at you on the streets as you walk past, which can be a little uncomfortable!!) My Everest Base Camp trek began in Kathmandu. In particular, Thamel Street, which is the Shopping Mecca for backpackers and hikers alike. Thamel Street is a bustling street filled with shops selling trinkets like yak bells, singing bowls, and “yak” shawls. But you also easily get crampons, buffs, hiking wear and anything and everything you could possibly require up in the Himalayan mountains! So don’t worry if you came I’ll equipped. You’re bound to find what you need here. The thing to remember while shopping is this: always ALWAYS bargain. Never settle for the first price quoted. Sometimes you can get up to 40-60% discount! Your bargaining power is of course stronger the more items you buy so go with friends if you can! Before COVID-19, Thamel was total chaos. Vehicles driving at speed in all directions. People coming and going from every direction. Trinkets lining the streets everywhere we turned. And those crazy bundle of electrical wires overhead! Reminds me of the electricity poles in Bangkok. Dusk in Kathmandu. We have just received news that the lockdown has been extended for another 14 days until 15 April. All flights have been grounded for weeks, save for a few rescue planes sent by the likes of Germany and Australia. Even trying to get some friends off the mountain from Lukla took a week to execute because of these unprecedented times! But it happened. Thanks to help from a global village of extraordinary human beings including @nepaltourism @nepal_unique_treks But with all the news on COVID-19 - the MCOs extended, the Zoom gym hangouts, Zoom calls and cooking galore, I thought I’d start sharing my journey up to Everest Base Camp that happened... gasp... just two weeks ago! Because that was pretty epic and no matter how we might be confined at home/hotel/wherever you might be, won’t it be nice to be reminded of the beauty that awaits us when we are released from our homes? Because it’s there. Waiting. Real and wild and stunning in a way that words can’t fully describe. So let’s start with this 🌒. A view I see every night in Kathmandu alongside a plethora of stars in the night sky. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen such clear skies but you can them here, in the valley of Kathmandu. Nuang oh Nuang, I've heard so MANY horror stories about you. Gunung Nuang is known to be one of the most difficult hikes in Peninsula Malaysia. There are two entrances to Nuang - via Janda Baik (the "easier", 4-6 hour hike) or Pangsun (which takes an average of 12 hours to complete!!). Since I did my first hike up Mount Kinabalu three years ago, I've heard of the legend of Nuang. How it was the MOST torturous hike there was. How people would start their hike before dawn and end it long after the sun had set. The leeches. The pain. The endless steep & rocky climbs. But with Everest Base Camp just around the corner, I knew I had to conquer Nuang at least once. So I did! Back-to-back. It's probably because I had feared it sooo much that the actual hike proved to be a lot less dramatic. There were no leeches; phew. We didn't need to use a parang to fight our way through the rainforest. And you've got views like these! This is the initial part of the "hike" - all 4.5 km of a seemingly never-ending path that leads to the "real" entrance. This part takes an average of 1 hour to complete and has enough incline to make it a real effort to get through! One of the most beautiful and unexpected views in Sapporo: the garden of former Hokkaido Government Office Building (or the Red Brick Office). It’s not possible to view the interior of the building but the gardens were open to the public. I won’t spend more than 10 minutes here. If I’m being really honest, I would say you can give this place a miss if you are pressed for time. You aren’t really missing out on anything! Throwback to the rows of gorgeously preserved stone buildings that are left behind from the Meiji and Taisho eras. You can find this behind the iconic Otaru Canal, where the former warehouses have now been converted to restaurants & bars. Perfect when looking to escape the snow. 🥶 An added benefit of this place: A short 8 minute walk from the JR Otaru Station, which is likely to be the way you come to Otaru from Sapporo, Hokkaido. So if you’re ever in Hokkaido and will be based in Sapporo for a couple of days, set aside 1 day for Otaru. Brrr imagine hiking up this mountain with snow coming up to your knees!! It was a LOT harder than I'd have thought. You can't see them in this photo but towards my left, there was a very large group of Japanese school children gleefully sliding down the mountain side on their homemade slides: cardboards wrapped in plastic with a little handle sticking out of it. They looked like they were having a lot of fun!! That'd have been my ideal kind of school trip, if only it was possible in sunny, humid Malaysia. 🙈 But it's ok. Everest is coming.
