Will you be my book matchmaker? I am ISO: a compelling, fun and fast-paced series. I just binge-read the Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley and am ready for a new one. What should I read? I need something easy. Past series favs include Outlander and Flavia deLuce (on audio). I want to avoid mysteries and fantasy (I have a bunch of those TBRs already). . Have you heard of the Seven Sisters series? It was a bookstagram rec, and was fun to read during the past few hard months. Overall the series is a solid ⭐⭐⭐ for me, with THE SUN SISTER being closer to ⭐⭐. I think the author chose to tell the wrong story here, she centered a white woman's story here while at the same time introducing a black woman with a much more compelling and, frankly, more interesting story. But she barely gave that character a few pages. It was disappointing and pretty off-putting. . Anyway, back to ME. Continuing to survive a pandemic, paired with an attempted coup on the U.S. Capitol building has me searching for compulsively bingeable books. Help a girl out! What should I read next? . #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #bookseries #booksearch #instareads

In a beach-read mood today. What about you? Any good beach read recommendations? . . . #bookstagram #book #read #reader #readinglife #igreads #bookish #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #booksbooksbooks #readersofinstagram #bookobsessed #plottwisttravels #bookworm #booklove

I'm not one to make reading lists, I'm more of a mood reader. But this summer you better believe I'll be reading from this pile of books complied of #ownvoices and #diversebooks. As a white woman I have a lot to learn, and it is past time to put in the work. . . . #bookstagram #book #read #reader #readinglife #igreads #bookish #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #booksbooksbooks #readersofinstagram #bookobsessed #plottwisttravels #bookworm #booklove #readdiversebooks #booklists #readblackwomen

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | THE MOUNTAINS SING, @nguyenphanquemai_'s debut English-language novel, absolutely blew me away. I could not stop reading it. And six months after I read the ARC (thanks @netgalley and @algonquinbooks!), I am still thinking about it. The prose is lyrical while also accessible, weaving stories told by a grandmother and granddaughter into a narrative that is heartbreaking and then reaffirming a hundred times over. . THE MOUNTAINS SING takes place over the past century in Vietnam, taking the reader through important points in the country's history. The Great Hunger, Land Revolution, the Vietnam War are the big stories in which the smaller stories of everyday life weave through.  We visit the cities of Hanoi, Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), and Nam Định and see a family’s fortune change in two short generations. We experience family gains and losses, abandonments, and profound tragedies. . Halfway through the story, Hương, granddaughter and a leading voice in the book, says: “If I had a wish, I would want nothing fancy, just a normal day when all of us could be together as a family; a day where we could just cook, eat, talk, and laugh. I wondered how many people around the world were having such a normal day and didn’t know how special and sacred it was.” ❤️ . This is a challenging read and may be triggering to some (war, death, abandonment). But if you are a reader who is interested in learning more about Vietnam and its history, this is an accessible historical fiction told by an #ownvoices author who grew up in Vietnam. It is also May’s @diversespines read!  So pick this up and head over to their page to see what they had to say about it throughout the past month. . #themountainssing #bookrecs #readwomen #bookstagram #book #read #reader #readinglife #igreads #smallbusiness #smallbiz #bookish #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #booksbooksbooks #readersofinstagram #bookobsessed #plottwisttravels #bookworm #booklove #literarylifestyle #literarytravel #literaryhiddengems #reviewsneedlovetoo #morebookslessalgorithm #readaroundtheworld #booksandtravel #literarytravel #travelreads

I have been making the rounds of "book of the month" subscriptions, and my latest is from @thedialbookshop in Chicago's Loop. It is a beautiful little bookshop, packed with books and lined with huge windows that look out onto Michigan Avenue and Grant Park. . I am only one month into this book of the month, and wow - I love it. April's selection was sent to me in early May (I subscribed late in the month), and when I opened up the package, I laughed out loud. They sent everyone Evelyn Waugh's WHEN THE GOING WAS GOOD, written in 1946. Nothing like seeing that title during a quartine and worldwide pandemic. . Then a few weeks after, I received a long email about the book, delving into themes of the book and highlighting a book club discussion coming up on May 30. They summarized the book amongst COVID-19 by saying, "We should try and remain steadfast in our commitment to joviality and to seeing more of this beautifully gnarly world." Indeed! . For $15/month, I'm sticking with this one for a while. What other monthly subscriptions should I be trying? . . . #bookstagram #book #read #reader #readinglife #igreads #smallbusiness #smallbiz #bookish #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #booksbooksbooks #readersofinstagram #bookobsessed #plottwisttravels #bookworm #booklove #literarylifestyle #literarytravel #literaryhiddengems #readaroundtheworld #booksandtravel #literarytravel #travelreading

A look at Vietnam through the years

The Mountains Sing takes place over the past century in Vietnam, taking the reader through essential points in the country’s history. We visit the cities of Hanoi, Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), and Nam Dinh and see a family’s fortune change in two short generations. By turning to the first page of The Mountains Sing, you will open the door into an authentic Viet Nam where proverbs are sprinkled throughout daily conversations, where lullabies and poems are sung. You will experience the colors, richness and complexity of our culture, beginning with our Vietnamese names and language, which appear in full diacritical marks…Forty-five years after the war, tremendous progress has been made in terms of reconciliation between Viet Nam and the United States.

I just adore these spines. The book covers are beautiful too. I need to surround myself in bright cheerful books more often. Definite mood booster. 📚 📚 📚 #bookstagram #book #read #reader #readinglife #igreads #bookish #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #booksbooksbooks #readersofinstagram #bookobsessed #plottwisttravels #bookworm #booklove #bookspines

Have you read CODE NAME HELENE by @ariel.lawhon? Not many books keep me up late at night, but this one did, four nights in a row (a BIG deal when you have little kids who still wake up in the middle of the night). The characters, the setting, the tone, it made me feel like I was in the depths of the French resistance along side Nancy Wake, or Helene as her compatriots knew her. I found myself a 5⭐ book, and a new favorite author. She has a great backlist, so be sure to check out her other books. I WAS ANASTASIA was a thrilling read as well. . So many good books came out this spring, and while I missed celebrating them on their official pub dates here on IG, I have not missed devouring them thanks to @netgalley and various publishers. A very special thanks to @doubledaybooks for this advanced reading copy, I loved it so much I ended up purchasing my own when it was released! . . . #bookstagram #book #read #reader #readinglife #igreads #smallbusiness #smallbiz #bookish #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #booksbooksbooks #readersofinstagram #bookobsessed #plottwisttravels #bookworm #booklove #literarylifestyle #literarytravel #literaryhiddengems #reviewsneedlovetoo #morebookslessalgorithm #readaroundtheworld #booksandtravel #literarytravel #travelreading

Back in March when things shut down in Chicagoland, I went for a walk around my town to take it all in. Past my closed bookstore, shuttered restaurants, and finally my library. I was fine until I saw this sign. It was all in my head until this. And then I shut down. . Since then I have been working full time. Parenting a toddler. Teaching a Kindergartener. Counseling small business owners as their dreams are coming to a close. I've been a committed partner to my husband. The cook, cleaner, the everything to everyone. And I somehow still remained shut down, having lost myself in the process. . As the sun shines more brightly, I am slowly coming back. I am changed because of this, and not because of any health scares with me or my family. But because we have had none. We are so privileged. We have jobs, kids who are safe and loved, supportive parents, a home that is just right for us. So as I emerge from a months-long loss of self, I will start to emerge here. Sharing what I love with supportive people who I have never met. 😂 Thank you for being here for me to check in with. I love all your #bookstagram posts, recommendations and thoughts, they bring me back to myself. . If you have been struggling too, I am here for you. Just say "hey". . . . #bookstagram #book #read #reader #readinglife #igreads #smallbusiness #smallbiz #bookish #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #booksbooksbooks #readersofinstagram #bookobsessed #plottwisttravels #bookworm #booklove

Hello! Is it me you're looking for? Well, probably not because it has been so long. 😂 Just checking in, Instagrammers. I am loving seeing your book and home-whipped coffee recommendations (both on point and delish). #partner #netgalley | When one thinks of Winston Churchill, one thinks of the caricature of him. A quirky, imposing man, smoking a cigar, directing England’s response to the war from the Cabinet War Rooms and often dictating war directives from his daily bath. . What Erik Larson brings to THE SPLENDID AND THE VILE is so much more than the usual version of Churchill.  Larson provides a humanization of him, his cabinet, staff, and family, from the beginning of the war through the end of his first year as Prime Minister. Just like his other books, Larson is meticulous in his storytelling, making you feel like you are on the ground, in the thick of it with the rest of England. It read like a fiction novel because the cabinet members were so full of character and nuance. I also enjoyed the keen sense of place throughout. You could see London experience the bombing as if you were there yourself, and could easily imagine walking through the hills of the country and coming upon a downed Luftwaffe bomber, left in place to prove the point that the RAF was doing its job. . ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 stars for incredible writing and keeping this history-genre adverse reader hooked through 464 pages of wartime grief and triumph. If I were to visit London, I’d be sure to pair this book with a trip to the Cabinet War Rooms (recently renamed Churchill War Rooms), as well as the Imperial War Museum in London. Thank you to @netgalley and Crowne Publishing for a chance to read this advanced readers copy of this book! Books about Ireland...which are your favorites? I tried James Joyce before and found him...fine. ANGELA'S ASHES by Frank McCourt was stunning. Anything about Northern Ireland is fascinating to me. Raise your hand if you are a mom who wishes you were traveling the world, but can't because you have kids and they are pulling every last cent out of your wallet. 🙋🏻‍♀️ Same. If I had any extra 💲💲💲right now I'd be in a very warm place with unyielding sunshine. But alas I am not, so I'm doubling down on the kids thing and trying to teach them culture while I'm grounded. . In the same place? Check out A YEAR FULL OF STORIES by Angela McAllister. Kids will love this fun selection of short stories from cultures across the world, sorted by month with holiday themes. The illustrations are fun and whimsical and so are the stories. I found this at the library today and loved reading through it! Good for ages 6+, the stories are a bit longer, so elementary kids will be the right audience for this one. . Lack of ☀️ + kids with fevers + work overload = a non-existent Instagram account. So hello again! 👋🏻 I'm currently dreaming of future trips to get me through it all. The countdown to Florida is at 6ish weeks now. I'll be heading to New Orleans in May, and Newport, RI in late July. Give me all the sun and good food and beach vibes! I can't wait! . Are you heading anywhere warm and sunny soon? Spread the joy and tell me where you're heading. I may have a good book rec waiting for you. 😎 . . . #bookstagram #book #read #reader #readinglife #igreads #smallbusiness #smallbiz #bookish #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #booksbooksbooks #readersofinstagram #bookobsessed #plottwisttravels #bookworm #booklove #literarylifestyle #literarytravel # #readaroundtheworld #booksandtravel #literarytravel #travelreading

#fridayintroductions time! Hi, I'm Lindsay. I run Plot Twist Travels, your guide to literary adventures. I love to read and share books with a strong sense of place and to travel to places where I find local literary hidden gems. . Here are a few other things I'm loving right now: 🍩 Friday donuts with @doritedonuts. They are the best donuts in Chicago! 🧘🏻‍♀️ The Stop, Breathe, Think App from @sbtbreathe These are short meditations that are personalized based on how you are feeling right in that moment. It has been a lifesaver for me this week. 🥤The @spindriftfresh raspberry lime drink. So good. 🎧 My @bose headphones because people in my office are loud! A girl needs to concentrate! 🤣 My two kids giggling last night. I wish I could bottle the laughter of two girls, ages 3 and 5, as they make each other giggle. Watching that is my happy place. . Food and stuff related to food almost always makes me happy! But I tried to branch out today by including more than just food. 😂 What is making you happy today? . . . #bookstagram #book #read #reader #readinglife #igreads #smallbusiness #smallbiz #bookish #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #booksbooksbooks #readersofinstagram #bookobsessed #plottwisttravels #bookworm #booklove #literarylifestyle #literarytravelagency #thingsthatmakemehappy
