From Utah to the Bay Area, this birthday was my first time celebrating outside of family since I moved back to the USA 4 years ago. In the past year, I’ve grown my community here in The Bay Area enough to celebrate with multiple circles of friends - most of them outside of anything travel-related. And it honestly means the world to me because finding my people here (in addition to fam) is what finally made home actually feel like home again after all these years. 🥹 But how blessed am I that I got to start my birthday festivities being celebrated by many of my women travel friends while at a travel conference in this era of not traveling as much as I used to?! the wholesome tea in the 7th pic tho 🤭 & some reflective thoughts below ⬇️ STILL NOT OVER #Romanny3005 LAST WEEKEND 😍 I left Utah early to make it to my friends’ wedding and it was like a mini high school reunion that left my heart so happy! It also got me feeling a bit reflective and tbh, kind of in awe about how many lives we actually live in a lifetime (something I think about often). Some of these people have known all versions of me growing up together in Daly City. Some only knew the high school and college versions of me. Some still know me, but these days, only the me they see through social media. Others, I haven’t seen or talked to in years, and are rarely on social media so they don’t know me at all anymore. And vice versa for me about them. But how blessed are we to get the opportunity to come together and celebrate our friends’ love and witness their commitment to each other while all being in the same place at the same time again for the first time in ages? We’ll all go on continuing to live our current lives and multiple more, and we may or may not ever know those versions of each other, or even come together again like this, which made this night so much more special. WHY REPRESENTATION IN TRAVEL IS ESSENTIAL FOR WOMEN OF COLOR: ✨To break down barriers ✨To reclaim spaces historically dominated by one narrative ✨To amplify diverse voices ✨To create a more inclusive global community ✨To inspire future generations to roam & thrive in new horizons STORYTIME: “I love what you do because I wish I had someone like you to look up to when I used to travel solo - not just as another woman, but especially as another Pinay! Back then it was just white males.” ⬆️ That’s what a fellow Filipina American told me at one of my meetups earlier this year (and what I put in my FAM trip application.) So when I found out I was selected for a FAM trip to explore the outdoors in Heber Valley, Utah, I was excited to say the least! But also nervous, a little scared, and kind of out of place because… …I’m not an outdoors girlie …I’ve never heard of fly fishing before this trip …I didn’t grow up doing things like snow activities or swimming in craters Multiple times during our trip, me and my fellow Queens of Heber Valley said to each other, “We don’t do things like this!” But there we were... DOING THOSE OUTDOORSY & NATURE THINGS (with our city girl swag 😜) AND LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT. A big part of why I share all my adventures & show up the way I do on social media is to show my Filipino American and women of color communities that we CAN be all the things we never imagined we could be. here’s your reminder to ✨DO MORE THINGS OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE✨ this is where the personal growth comes in this is where you build confidence this is where the magic happens this is where you find yourself I’m always doing that when I’m traveling - going to places where I don’t speak the language, navigating areas I’m not familiar with, immersing myself in cultures that are foreign to me. Now that I’m more rooted in the Bay Area these days, I’ve had to be creative in finding ways not to get too complacent in the routines I’ve come to love. The most important thing I’ve found is that: ‼️ stepping out of your comfort zone doesn’t have to be anything big ‼️ to feel that same kind of confidence and magic.
