I loved this tradition with my husband, early in our marriage before we had children. It was so fun and romantic! Now we get to enjoy it through our daughter’s eyes. When my children were young I knew I wanted to have an elf to bring some extra Christmas magic all season, but Elf on the Shelf wasn’t my favorite. I wanted our elf to bring the true spirit of Christmas, not mischief. (And yet, you’ll still find me laughing my head off at the pranks I see on the socials and Pinterest 😂). Enter Jingles, our kindness elf! He hides in a different spot in our house each day, today he was in our plants. He leaves the kids a letter in his mailbox explaining the “kindness activity” for the day and telling them something he loves or has noticed about them. One day our activity was to make nice note snowflakes and snowflake attack a friend’s door, they loved it! He also brings them small gifts or activities to do together to mix it up. Every year, he brings us a Christmas book to add to our collection. Honestly, these are some of my favorite things to bring out of the Christmas box. There are so many ways to incorporate unique ornaments into your family Christmas tree! What is your favorite Christmas ornament? Does it fall into any of these categories? 1-Souvenir: My husband and I look for a pretty ornament as a souvenir anytime we go on a trip together. It’s so fun to pull out these out each December and talk about the fun vacations we have had and the memories we shared! 2-Annual recap: We pick out one ornament each year to sum up a major highlight or experience we had that year. Something big like buying our first home or having a baby, or something smaller like somewhere we spent a lot of time. 3-Reminder of an absent loved one: We wish we could spend every holiday with all of our loved ones but that isn’t always possible. It is important to us to hang reminders of both deceased and absent loved ones on our tree to make them feel a little closer each day. 4-Baby-Safe: For the years little ones are about the house, it’s difficult to keep fragile ornaments near the bottom of the tree. But you don’t have to keep those branches empty! Just fill them with baby-safe options that your little ones can take off and even play with, like these cute Squishmallow ornaments. 5-Memorabilia: It can be fun to turn things into ornaments that were not meant to be ornaments. Tickets from a first date, photos, etc. 6-Passed down: When I moved out of the house to my own apartment, my parents gave me a box of ornaments that had hung on our family tree growing up. 7-Commemorate: Celebrate a special day or occasion with an ornament. 8-Gifted: Has anyone ever gifted you an ornament? Great, hang it on your tree! What a cool way to keep your family and friends close to you through the holidays. 9-Experience: Arrange a date, a girls night, a family night or other outing to create your own ornament! Pottery, stain glass, iron works, and other local artisans will often have classes where you can make your own creations. 10-DIY: Social Media is chock-full of ideas for creating the cutest Do-it-yourself ornaments. Head to your closest Hobby Lobby and pick up some materials for a fun evening of crafting your own keepsakes to hang on your tree!
