The First National Media Symposium in South Sudan

JHR and Media Authority concludes the first national media symposium in South Sudan Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) in collaboration with South Sudan’s Media Authority has concluded the first national media symposium in the country. The symposium brought together over one hundred government officials from all thirty two states of the country including the disputed border of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan. Under the theme ‘’Strengthening the media in South Sudan towards a professional, vibrant and free media for all’’ the symposium organized for the first time in the young country facilitated an open discussion between media practitioners and the government officials on how the two can work together to promote open and free flow of information in line with the country’s media and professional ethics. JHR’s Team Leader in South Sudan Laura Bain said the symposium is an open forum to allow the media interface with government officials to understand the roles of each other for the good of the country.

Speaking the truth through creation of Naotkmaegwanning community newspaper

In the first days of meeting with staff at Baibombeh Anishinaabe School in Naotkamegwanning First Nation, inquiring about opportunities to provide journalism training to the students, it was recommended that I speak to Ian Crow, a community member now employed as the school’s “grad coach”. Gathering information about the current landscape of community communications, we were able to identify gaps in communication, including in informing the community of upcoming events, community politics, and low levels of community engagement. After Ian showed me some possible templates that could be used for a paper and what momentum he could help build within the school, facilitating a community paper became the most logical first step for the program. Having found out the high school teachers and students had just started up a Travel Club to organize an end of year trip for the school and with my personal experience of the importance of travel, I suggested that distribution of the papers, which were to be printed at the school, could be used as a fundraiser for the club.

Migisi Sahgaigan goes to Shakopee Powwow

This year Migisi Sahgaigan First Nation was awarded funding by the Laidlaw Foundation to undertake a cultural revitalization program called Reclaiming Our Identity. As a Community Media Trainer for the Indigenous Reporter’s program, I jumped at the opportunity, as it seemed like a great way to share media knowledge with community members. Indigenous community members are the owners of Shakopee’s institutions, and it is mainly non-Indigenous people working at them. Many family and community ties span the border, and powwows are a great way to connect with relatives living in neighboring communities.
