In the hundreds of hours each year I spend counseling coaches this is a constant battle; especially when they are faced with adversity. Focus is more important than genius and there are perennial winners at every level of basketball (and other sports) from high school, to college and to professional who exemplify this. Roy Williams, the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the University of North Carolina, provides an example of this level of focus. But a talent for focus, in the day and age of constant, new and often conflicting information, is the new genius.
This information was well received and thanks to some hard work and strategic affiliations, Radius Athletics was born and I began offering my time to help coaches. The coach was a veritable encyclopedia of information on what the “big name” coaches thought about defensive matters but did not have thoughts of his own. You want to make sure you are teaching what is “right” or “best” and studying the teachings of prominent and accomplished coaches is a way of seeking validation. It is not a waste of time to study the game and the teachings of others more experienced and accomplished, but you will run into conflicting information.

Much like a boxer throws a jab-cross combination to land a crushing blow, enhancing the DHO adds punch to the action. The defense is forced to defend a combination of elements – the down screen followed by the handoff. Note how quickly the elements are strung together to create the advantage, much like a boxer’s cross quickly follows their jab. Player 5 follows moving into position to set the ball screen for Player 2 as he/she exits the handoff.
