There's a lot going on this month! June is pride month, Black music month, and there's a ton of drink holidays. To celebrate Black Music Month and National Bubbly Day, we've compiled some iconic moments in hip hop that helped influence drinking trends. Champagne wasn't super big in the hip hop world until the late 80's when it was introduced by Branson Belchie (aka Branson B.) to Biggie and P. Diddy. From there, poppin bottles became the go-to method for celebrating like a baller. Thanks to the name dropping and champagne imagery in rap songs, brands like Cristal, Moët, and Dom Pérignon became household staples. You may even remember the moment when Jay Z, one of the biggest promoters of Cristal, single-handedly ushered in Ace of Spades as THE champagne of choice after controversial comments from Cristal's owners. Now, Ace of Spades and Luc Belaire seem to be the go-to bubblies for today's rappers. The "Champagne Papi" himself gave us the 24-hour champagne diet. For #nationalbeerday we're throwing it back to when we sat on the panel for Tek Cyar uh de Root Festival, an event headed by Jamaal Lemon for Charleston Beer Week. The festival combines "food, drink, and conversation to better understand today's inequitable spaces". And it did just that! We discussed the inequities of Black people in the beverage space, Gullah Geechee history, and the importance of engaging those outside of your immediate community. And of course the beer was flowing! It was a wonderful celebration of both heritage and future.
