🌿🌼 Last month was National Garden Month! 🌱✨ From vibrant rain gardens to buzzing pollinator paradises, Philly's gardens are blooming with purpose! 🌼🐝 Here's why these green havens are so crucial: 🌧️ Rain Gardens: Combatting stormwater runoff, these gardens absorb rainwater, preventing flooding and protecting our waterways. 🌾 Native Gardens: Bursting with native plants, they conserve water, support local wildlife, and preserve Philly's natural spaces. 🥕 Edible/Community Gardens: These plots not only provide fresh, nutritious produce but also promote local sustainability and community resilience. 🦋 Pollinator Gardens: A buzzing hub for bees, butterflies, and more, they ensure crucial pollination for our crops and wildflowers, fostering biodiversity and food security. Let's celebrate these green gems and cultivate a greener, healthier Philly together! What type of garden are you currently growing? 🏙️🌱 📸: Philadelphia Water Department Description: A rain garden installed with the help of "Rain Check" on South 45th Street.

How Bella Vista Neighbors Association fundraised to keep its neighborhood clean & hire returning citizens

The Bella Vista Neighbors Association (BVNA), a nonprofit community organization dedicated to public safety, preservation, and community building, has been crowdfunding since 2018 to pay for their own street sweeping. There were a lot of members of the board who were really interested in litter and waste management and who think that the city needs to be doing more to keep our neighborhoods clean,” says Alison Perelman, chair of BVNA’s beautification committee. When the city didn’t provide, BVNA decided to hire ACAM management, a minority- and woman-owned cleaning company which had been working with other civic associations such as the Queen Village Neighbors Association, to start cleaning the neighborhood’s streets. While the program’s success is an incredible model for other neighborhoods and civic associations, it is important to recognize that not all neighborhoods have access to the resources that Bella Vista does.
