Writing about @ncwines today and an exceptional brunch and tasting I enjoyed at @jolovineyards in Pilot Mountain. A lot of folks are surprised to learn North Carolina has a wine scene, and they're even more surprised to learn we have several AVAs (American Viticultural Area - a distinct wine growing region). Up until Prohibition, NC was the leading wine producer in the US, but during that brief dry spell our winemakers fled to more fertile fields and we were slow to catch up. But catch up we have. North Carolina's mountains are a place of parks and waterfalls and hiking and biking trails, but they're also full of vineyards and orchards. Yesterday I visited @grandadsapples in Hendersonville, NC, to check out their you-pick orchards (more than 40 varieties of apples!) and pumpkin patch (10 acres coming along nicely) and corn maze (did I almost get lost? I'll never tell) and, of course the fresh apple cider donuts and slushies (not pictured; I was hungry). In a word: amazing. I see plenty of waterfalls out exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but I've never seen a waterfall plunging down the 30 meter face of a glacier. On our expedition cruise to the archipelago that makes up Svalbard we saw a half dozen waterfalls on this glacier alone. And, incidentally, we did our polar plunge about 2 kilometers away from this, jumping into -2 C water for the most invigorating 10 seconds of my life.
