"An indispensable element of my mission": UN poverty envoy hears stories of poverty and discrimination in East London

Continuing his investigation into the impact of austerity in the UK, Philip Alston, the UN Special Rapporteur on poverty and human rights, heard moving testimonies from local people and organisations in Newham as they described their experiences of poverty and discrimination in the capital. The Magpie Project, which provides practical support and advice to local mothers and children under five in temporary or insecure accommodation, said that they had recorded 2,000 under fives as homeless.. Universal Credit, the supposed reform of the benefits system, rolling together benefits into one monthly payment, was criticised at length. Indeed part of Alston’s UN mandate, detailed on the Special Rapporteur’s website,  is to “study the impact of discrimination and to pay particular attention to the situation of women, children and other vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities living in extreme poverty”. The Special Rapporteur released an initial report on his findings on the 16th of November, before preparing an interim report on how far the UK government is meeting its human rights obligations under international human rights law.

Being Human Festival 2018: Human Rights Consortium Highlights

The Being Human Festival is the UK’s only national festival of the humanities and is dedicated to sharing the riches of humanities research with the general public. As we reach the end of this centenary year of (some) women gaining suffrage in the UK, it is fitting that this year’s programme contains many events that shine a light on the historic campaign of the suffragettes and also on the state of women’s rights today. Over in Lincoln, “Winning the Vote: Equal Rights Past and Future”, will allow secondary school students to learn about the history of suffrage and work on ways to find effective representative representation in the 21st century. On the 15th of November in the Crypt of Canterbury Cathedral the organisation Refugee Tales will share the stories of refugees, asylum seekers and immigration detainees they have gathered and introduce their work campaigning to end the practice of indefinite detention in the UK.

LBQ women and the need for specified activism in Kenya

Hayo draws our attention to the specific NGO-run clinics for gay men or men that have sex with men (MSM), which provide essential sexual health care. In order to fully understand the urgent need for specified programmes, Hayo draws attention to the thematic issues faced by LBQ women in Mombasa, but also in the wider Kenyan context. While many organisations work on the sexual health of Gay men or MSM, there are no organisations dedicated to the health needs of LBQ women. As this project is not solely targeted at young LBQ girls, RWOK is also able to apply for government funding, demonstrating the necessary ingenuity needed for LBQ organisations to sustain themselves.
