Guide to the 2016-17 Northeast Comp Scene

It’s the time of year where the campus rungs get dusted off and the hangboard areas at the gym are filled with climbers strengthening their fingers in hopes of achieving glory at the latest climbing comps here in the Northeast. A recent addition to the bouldering circuit that boasts a multi-gym collaboration in an effort to bring together the climbing community through a bad-ass comp series! March 11, 2017; The Gotham Citizen & TBS Championship at The Cliffs Long Island City, NY. The date says 2016 in the photo but worry not, you won’t need to time travel to attend this comp as it is really happening in 2017 on April 8.

Gear Review: Cypher Vesta Sport Quickdraw

The Vesta draws come in a wire-gate or solid-gate carabiner on the rope clipping end with a 12 cm sling between the carabiners. One of the aspects I really like about this quickdraw is the wide sling with replaceable rubber o-rings that keeps the draw from flipping/twisting while clipping. After using the Vesta sport quickdraws for a week at RRG alongside my Black Diamond and Petzl draws, I really didn’t find any difference in the functionality or performance among them. Overall, the Cypher Vesta Sport Quickdraw appears to be quite worthy to be clipped alongside the other reliable quickdraw brands.

Review: Cypher Codex Climbing Shoe

When we were first asked to try out the Cypher Codex climbing shoe, we weren’t too familiar with the Cypher brand. Based on their website, the U. S. based company makes a variety of climbing shoes, approach shoes and various climbing hardware. The Codex was designed for steep climbing and thin edges, something I am very fond of thrashing my feet upon. The Codex was tough to get on and felt like I was going to rip the pull loop off on the back heel, but it appears to be held firmly in place.

Tri-State Bouldering Series

Paul and Kary Williams, the GM of the Cliffs, discussed holding a comp that was more interactive and involved with the regional climbing community in the northeast. The essence of climbing in the northeast has always been community focused, which is why Paul and Kary wanted to bring the community together in a fun and exciting comp series. The essence of climbing in the northeast has always been community focused, which is why Paul and Kary wanted to bring the community together in a fun and exciting comp series. The TBS consists of three qualifying comps in three different states in the northeast: The Brawl at the New Jersey Rock Gym in New Jersey; Power Struggle at Prime Climb in Connecticut; and Feats of Strength at The Cliffs at Valhalla in New York.
