I Yam What I Yam: Medicinal and Culinary Yams

Although yams have been around for eons, there are so many species (over 600), it can get very confusing at times. Which are eaten and which used medicinally? Are they all similar to each other? Plus where do they grow and how are they used? Wild yams have been an incredibly important food for much of the world

Korean Hand Therapy

Dr. Woo cured his headache and was so excited that he proceeded to develop a comprehensive therapeutic system that can be easily learned by anyone, enabling them to Take Pain Control into Your Own Hands which is the title of the best introductory book on KHT written by Ilana Newman, MD. Dr. Yoo used a needle on that fateful day, but many acupuncturists like myself have found that stimulation of corresponding points on the hand relating to painful areas of the body using a dull object such as a ball point pen (without ink), the tip of one’s keys or a fingernail can relieve acute and chronic pains immediately or within minutes. It is relatively easy to learn and is a perfect healing tool for clinical practice requiring no special equipment other than a dull probe and perhaps some inexpensive pellets that can be purchased and applied to reactive points on the hand corresponding to diseases and pains anywhere on the body. Using the illustrations below (from Dr. Ilana Newman’s Take Pain Control into Your Own Hands and Korean Hand Therapy Course 1 Workbook by Dr. Lee Funk DC, respectively), locate the point on the middle finger corresponding to the throat.

Walnuts are the only nut that don’t congest the Liver, as do all other nuts and nut butters in excess (causing many symptoms such as nausea, irregular or painful menses, PMS, tight neck and shoulders, depression, and other signs of stagnation). Or apply the extract externally for skin parasites, fungus and other skin diseases (the husks are dried and taken internally also for gastrointestinal parasites).

After years of travelling and living in different countries, I’ve finally settled in Devon, in the South West of England, and have been working as an Ayurvedic Practitioner and with Indigenous Healing Work for several years. In my spare time I love playing the guitar and have begun the violin, and greatly enjoy walking by the river near my home, partner dancing, and having a good cup of tea, a big roast and singing with close friends.
