Glorious 30s – Rock and Ice article 3

Despite what you might expect from the title of this piece, I was not psyched about turning 30. I really thought I’d be one of those people who glide into their fourth decade without as much as a shrug of care, but as the birthday approached I was filled a sense of impending doom

The Tipping Point: A Tale of Slack-Faced Sport Climbing – Rock and Ice Article 2.

It’s your friend’s or perhaps your own face in the mirror. It’s your friend’s or perhaps your own face in the mirror. Reduction in NENAT is the underlying mechanism behind climber’s “slightly slack face. It’s the body’s way of starting to manage the crisis and conserving much needed energy where it can.

A Norwegian Summer

It wasn’t long before I floated the idea to Maria that she and I spend a few days at the start of the trip in Hanshallern cave. So David also spent a couple of days route climbing (he smashed it, sending his first two sport climbs EVER :)) The route shares the start of Nordic Flower but then busts out along some incredible features, finishing on the slopey rail that also marks the end of the well known Thor’s Hammer and Valhalla. It was supposed to be a bouldering trip, I was coming back from an injury (I couldn’t do a pull up two months before! ), and I hadn’t even planned to try the route.

Spring ’18: Rainshadow and Voralpsee

It’s been a hectic few weeks and finally, on a 9-hour flight to Canada for the 2018 Arc’teryx Rock Academy in Squamish, I found time to put down some words about the last few months. I had felt strong on the route but spent a lot of the season recovering from the accident I had on it right at the start; both physically and mentally that time was mainly spent finding my stride again. I spent a lot of days there with both Ryan and Buster and I’ll miss having them to try the route with moving forward! The crag is not big (in terms of number of routes) but it’s hard to onsight as the rock is very white so you can’t see holds far ahead.
