A night under canvas at Llechwedd Slate Mines

Since the 1970’s, the site has operated as a tourist attraction with tours of the slate caverns, and more recently is home to one of the Zip World sites and a mountain bike park. The elevated location provides fantastic views of the old slate quarry, the surrounding mountains and offers perfect views of the Zip World ziplines (which were sadly not in operation during our stay). The tour, which lasts about 1 hour and 15 minutes, takes you on a journey through several caverns and tunnels deep underground where you can learn about the mining that took place, as well as getting an understanding of what life was like for the miners in these dark and damp caverns. The Quarry Explorer Tour is an off road adventure on an ex-military truck which takes you through the surrounding quarries and to the summit of the slate mountain.

A beautiful stay on the shores of Lake Windermere

Whatever the weather, the Lake District is a stunning part of England to explore, and for our final night, the weather had cleared and we were staying at the beautiful Beech Hill Hotel & Spa on the shores of Lake Windermere. Disclosure: This stay was hosted by Beech Hill Hotel & Spa but all views and opinions are my own. It’s a great spot to catch the Windermere Lake Cruise steamers travelling on their journeys between Lakeside and Bowness-on-Winderemere. From April to September, water sports are available from the jetty at the Beech Hill Hotel & Spa. The Lakeview Spa at the Beech Hill Hotel & Spa One final stop before checking out of the hotel, was to take a look around the Lakeview Spa which really lives up to it’s name. Lakeview Spa features an indoor pool, a sauna and steam room, three treatment rooms and large outdoor space with loungers and two Vitality Spa Pools.

Exploring the ruins of Gwrych Castle

Gwrych Castle was built between 1812 and 1822, by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh, as a memorial to his mother’s ancestors, the Lloyd’s of Grwych. From the Formal Garden, Lady’s Walk meanders above towards  the Gazebo area and the location of many monkey puzzle trees planted in the 1840’s, as part of the original garden scheme. A set of steps leads upwards from Lady’s Walk to Nant-y-Bella Tower, which forms a gateway and the family entrance to the rear of the main house, with the Maiden’s Tower standing at the rear into the woodland. Exiting through the Main Gate and wandering through the woodland back to the meadows below, there’s an opportunity to take a close up view of the front of the Main House, again to admire this amazing building.
