Dr. Lady Doctor OB/GYN

Dr. Lady Doctor makes a house call with Erica Ballard Health in this week's The Full Plate podcast! 👉 What a “normal” menstrual cycle looks like and why it’s a critical marker of overall health 👉 How to safely transition off birth control (if you want to) and what to expect in the process 👉 What the “fertile window” is and whether it’s a reliable form of birth control This week On today’s episode of The Full Plate, she speaks openly about the female body and helps us re-evaluate the questions we ask.

One size doesn't fit all. Why we need to continue to develop new contraceptive methods.

In an article called, Nonuse of contraception among women at risk of unintended pregnancy in the United States, the study authors evaluated factors associated with nonuse of contraception by US women at risk of becoming pregnant through analysis of a large, nationally representative database. % of women did not expect to have sex20% said they didn’t really mind if they got pregnant12% said their male partner did not want her to use birth control, or he did not want to use birth control10 % were worried about side effects of birth controlLeaving aside the 41% that said they did not think they could get pregnant (which I delve into further below) and the 20% who said they didn't really mind if they got pregnant (also known as "pregnancy ambivalence" the topic of a future post), the remaining reasons for non-use could be addressed with better contraceptive methods.did not expect to have sex = These options would likely be "on-demand" methods (like condoms) and better woman-controlled and user-friendly on-demand methods are desperately neededmale partner objection => more woman controlled options that are discrete and/or don't require a male partner's approval/participation (though reproductive coercion is a real issue which I will also discuss in a future post)side effects =

Your Questions Answered. Fibroids: Should I worry?

Unfortunately, fibroids can cause significant symptoms including heavy, painful periods; pelvic or abdominal pain and/or pelvic pressure. Fibroids in the uterine wall or inside of the uterus are more likely to cause problems with heavy, painful periods while fibroids on the outer surface of the uterus are more likely to cause pain and/pressure sensations, particularly if they are large. To treat fibroids you can: For heavy, painful periods treatments are similar regardless of the cause and can include hormonal therapies such as birth control pills, shots or implants or the hormonal IUD which all work similarly to decrease the thickness of the uterine lining and therefore decrease the amount of bleeding with periods. Fibroids can often be removed without removing the uterus but for women with many fibroids who are very symptomatic and don’t want pregnancies in the future, removing the uterus (hysterectomy) may be the best option.
