I am a timid woodland creature who is more afraid of you than you are of me. I am also a writer and artist who enjoys telling stories about found families and what happens when you feed the strays, usually with a bit of magic thrown in for good measure.

Highlights
Contagion by Erin Bowman – A Review

Having found Erin Bowman through her other books, Vengeance Road and Retribution Rails – which I absolutely fell head over heels in love with – After receiving an urgent SOS from a work detail on a distant planet, a skeleton crew is dispatched to perform a standard search-and-rescue mission. There is something silly in me that takes great pleasure in reading all the different ways different people interact with one another. None of these people were overt stereotypes, which I feel gets easy when you start having to fill out the traditional roles of say… a horror story, or a ship’s crew.

Fawkes By Nadine Brandes – A Review

Thomas Fawkes is turning to stone, and the only cure to the Stone Plague is to join his father’s plot to assassinate the king of England. But all Thomas knows is that the Stone Plague infecting his eye is spreading. So when his Keeper father, Guy Fawkes, invites him to join the Gunpowder Plot—claiming it will put an end to the plague Fawkes by Nadine Brandes is a colorful (haha) reimagining of the gunpowder plot that doesn’t quite end with the bang you might expect and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The New Adult Genre

Maybe you’re one of those people who’s getting a little tired of all these new and oddly specific genres that keep trying to pop up. Maybe you have heard of New Adult, maybe you’ve fallen prey to the misconceptions, maybe you don’t see the point. If Young Adult is about shiny young kids with potential overcoming the big bad, then New Adult is those same kids after the dust has settled, picking up the pieces and deciding where to go from there. If it’s so great, why isn’t it a ‘real’ genre?

Unbury Carol by Josh Malerman – A Review

Too bad for him the outlaw James Moxie knows Carol’s secret too, and he’s coming to save his long lost love from her unnatural grave. I would have no problem believing the story of Carol and Moxie has been told around campfires and at bedtimes for years and years. (I never had a favorite Sleeping Beauty retelling to begin with, but…) Honestly, knowing the female lead was going to be in a coma for a good portion of the book made me, well, morbidly curious. Dwight’s reasons for wanting to bury Carol are understandable and he’s just the right mix of competent and incompetent to make it stressful to read.
