After living in Slovenia for a few years and stumbling through the language horribly, I can now safely share this ridiculous list of words I have been saving in the notes folder on my phone. Morski pes translates literally to sea dog but no, Slovenia does not have a rare sea creature. WC is commonly used for restrooms, and stands for wash closet which is another word for a flush toilet in British English. Together that makes wc školjka translate literally into ‘toilet shell’ referring to the toilet bowl.

Originating in one of Slovenia’s oldest cities, Ptuj, this festival is a culturally rich and vibrant celebration meant to scare away winter. Kurentovanje is Slovenia’s carnival celebration that takes place during the lead up to Shrove Tuesday in Ptuj. These are loud furry monsters adorned with colorful ribbons and cow bells tied around their waist that attempt to scare away winter and bring in spring. Kurentovanje kicks off with a bonfire where Kurenti will first ring their bells and begin their work to scare away winter.
The ground beneath became distant until it disappeared as we quickly and quietly ascended in the hot air balloon into the clouds. I remember getting into the basket with Jaka, two German tourists, and the hot air balloon operator, but how it happened felt like magic. Everywhere was completely white and the only thing in sight was the shadow of the hot air balloon on the clouds.
