When I was an elementary school teacher, one of my classrooms was low enough to the ground I often thought, “I should ask administration to provide me with a window ladder so I can get the kids out if an active shooter ever entered our building.” It is disgusting how often as an educator you even have to think like this. Lockdown drills feel terrifying because they’re so fucking real and there’s NOTHING you wouldn’t do to protect those kids. When did I get to so out of touch with my own needs that I forgot the joy of just being still? I have guilt for asking for help, shame for needing it, and exhaustion if I don’t get it. Between my anxiety and adhd I feel like I’m on an emotional hamster wheel. I’m not going to sugar coat it, even without any mental health elements to motherhood, it’s hard. I beat myself up for wanting the things I want (aka time away from my kids or even just not wanting to play pretend with them) that sometimes help isn’t even enough. I’m back to therapy, finding the right medications #noshame , and utilizing mantras. I’m just sharing because this whole everyday is a joy in life, is #bull .
