Had an amazing talk with Ann Butler about the Benson Creative District. There's still time to submit a proposal. Don't let any moment pass you by that gives you a chance to create art with the people around you. There are many ways to support this project. Please get in touch with any of the Benson creative to see how you can help. “The problem is, we are married to individualism. Everyone has to give a little bit so we can all benefit. If you want to do well, you need to see your neighbor doing well.” Annie Butler said. We sat in a study room in the lovely Benson branch of the Omaha Public Library at 6015 Binney Street. Annie isn't only a champion of the arts but of the people as well. Her passion and drive radiates from her being, more lively and colorful than her tattoos and platinum blonde hair. The Benson Creative District’s goal is to work collaboratively with all Benson Residents, organizations and businesses to expand on existing creative initiatives. By using Benson’s art and culture they aim to shape the physical and social character of the neighborhood to promote enduring social change, improve the physical environment and spur economic development. The Artist Proposal submissions deadline is October 24th and the committee meeting is on October 25th at the Benson Public Library, which will start at 5:30pm. Public voting on submitted proposals will take place November 3rd through November 12th, also a public committee meeting and project announcements will take place on November 15th at the Benson Public Library. (Please email Annie at annie@bffomaha.org with any questions.) Annie has worked with Benson First Friday or BFF since they started in 2012. In 2020 legislation passed to give funding for creative districts. “The wording of the legislation focuses around tourism but my focus is on how art can improve and benefit a community. A creative district isn’t a place to go to take a photo in front of a mural. It’s a place where you can learn about its people.” A neighborhood can apply to the Nebraska Arts Council to get certified as a creative district, Ashland, Brownville, Beatrice, and Falls City of Nebraska all have creative districts and must be visited. Benson’s Creative District and others who seek to acquire certification are creating a collaborative lifestyle that would improve not just a space but the lives of the people who live in and travel to a creative district. “I want people to come to Benson and say, ‘this is who they are.’ Art allows you to create with people who are different from you and see their humanity.” Annie said. Benson Business Improvement District, Bff, and Maplestreet Constructs are the three managing partners of the creative district. The Creative District is not solely these three groups, they are actively separating each group from it. They want to ensure that this isn’t just one part of Benson speaking for the rest. East and west Benson working in unison to represent the people who live there. This is an opportunity for the community to put forth the kind of art they want to see in Benson. Think of the ideas that you’ve always wanted to see or try. Do not limit yourself. Shoot for the stars, you’ll land on the clouds if you miss. There are a multitude of assets, resources and people to help facilitate your proposal. 20 will be picked by the committee and the public will vote on those November 3rd through the 12th. “We can’t get anything done as individuals.” Annie said, “I want to see proposals that are strong collaborations that have benefit to the community as a whole.” #bensoncreativedistrict https://www.instagram.com/bensoncreativedistrict/ http://www.bffomaha.org/district.html

They create candles, bath bombs, and other fun products, all with rings hidden inside! I actually prefer this size of bath bombs to the big ones! I was, however, afraid that since they were mini that this product wouldn't come with a ring, which kind of defeats the purpose of Fragrant "Jewels" doesn't it? In case you are wondering, the rings come packaged like this to keep them safe from the water, scrubs, and bombs.
