Another amazing island off of the coast of Georgia is Cumberland Island. The only way to reach Cumberland Island is to take the national park boat or a private boat. The island is great for hiking and enjoying the uncrowded beach. You can also bring your bike to enjoy on the island. You do have to reserve ferry space though for your bike. The Avenue Of The Oaks is a scenic drive that you will want to enjoy in St. Simons Island. There are tunnels of live oaks to enjoy by driving through and on foot. This was part of an old plantation where 2 rows of oaks were planted in a straight row. My picture doesn't really make it look neat as cool as it does in person. St. Simons Island, Georgia has tree spirits to find during your visit! The tree spirits are said to immortalize the sailors aboard ships made from oak trees found on St. Simons Island. A father-son duo carved these amazing tree sculptures for visitors to find. There are 20 of these sculptures on the island, but some are located on private property. 🗺️ Stop in the St. Simons Island Welcome Center for a map to help find them. Our family loved this nature scavenger hunt! 😍 🧜‍♀️ The largest one is the mermaid Cora who is the protector of the island’s Loggerhead Sea Turtles. This is also our daughter’s name and she was just enamored with this carving! Fort Frederica National Monument is a beautiful spot on St. Simons Island, Georgia to explore. This English fort from the 1700s is the result of a land dispute of southern US with the Spanish. The English were trying to encroach on the Spanish settlement down in St. Augustine. Ultimately the English won out and took part of the Spanish territory. The fort itself is very small but is a beautiful area on the water. This fort has a free Junior Ranger program for kids to participate in. The Golden Isles Of Georgia are a must-see. They are beautiful and charming at the same time! We spent a day exploring St. Simons Island. There were fun shops and beautiful shoreline surrounding the St. Simons Island Lighthouse. You can enjoy the lighthouse museum and climb the 129 steps to the top. Have you ever viewed the synchronous fireflies? There are only a few places where this annual mating phenomenon takes place. The 2 national parks that have the fireflies are Great Smoky Mountains and Congaree. 👉See our blog post for info on the Congaree event. (In our Bl0) We recently learned that you can also view this at Lamar Alexander Rocky Fork State Park in Tennessee. The state park lottery for this event is open now through May 11th. Only 10 people/vehicles are selected per night. If you are selected to attend in the lottery, the program dates are May 24-26 and June 6-8.
