🌕 BLUE MOOOOOOON … I SAW YOU DRINKING ALOOOOOONE … 🌕 I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of spooky cocktails this week, so I wanted to give you one that, well … isn’t. I heard that this Saturday will give us a treat beyond a sugar-induced coma; it will be the first time since 1944 that the entire world will be able to see a blue moon on Halloween. I wanted to give y’all a truly blue cocktail, so I turned to my friends at @Empress1908Gin. Their vivid indigo-colored gin (naturally colored so thanks to one of the botanicals in it being butterfly pea flower) isn’t just nice to look at; this hand-crafted gin out of Canada has notes of juniper, rose, coriander seed, grapefruit peel, ginger, and butterfly pea. These worked nicely with the cocktail I chose below. BLUE MOON 2 oz Empress 1908 Gin 1/3 oz Giffard Pampelmousse 1/3 oz dry vermouth 1/3 oz @tealeavesco Classic Blue tea Garnish with a citrus peel Brew tea. Stir ingredients together with ice. Strain into chilled glass. Express citrus and garnish with peel. Having a stack of rocks glasses I think is the classiest look on a bar car, and I think these Talking Out of Turn rocks glasses ($20, set of 4) really make an impact. Cocktail tools are NOT the place to buy cheap; you want tools that will be reliable. Look for classic Texas cocktail recipes and signature cocktails from your favorite bars across the great state complete with the stories behind them and lovely photography. The space on a bar car is obviously limited, so if you run out of room, you can use something like this metallic wine total from Talking Out of Turn ($18) to hang a bottle on the side.

Famed Dallas chef Stephan Pyles is teaming up with Fireside Pies to bring us an all-new menu dubbed “Fireside by Pyles”. Pyles’s menu that he developed alongside Fireside Pies chef Joe Bozarth offers 10 items from shrimp ceviche to a chocolate bacon bourbon cake, but don’t expect traditional pizzas … Pyles is leaving those to the Fireside Pies team. Pyles is giving us the chance to enjoy his chocolate bacon bourbon cake made with Daily’s Bacon and Maker’s Mark whisky. Currently the menu is started at the Inwood location on September 17, but will soon be available at other Fireside Pies locations*. Still not ready to dine in a restaurant?
🍃 FALL FOR THIS FALL MARGARITA 🍃 ⠀ ⠀ One of our favorite cocktails, the traditional margarita, can really be enjoyed year ‘round … so why not give it a little early fall kick with a transitional ingredient, sage!?⠀ ⠀ ⠀ THE RESTING GARDEN MARGARITA 1.75 oz Roca Patrón Silver .5 oz Patrón Citronge Mango⠀ 1 oz fresh lemon juice⠀ .75 oz agave syrup⠀ 6-8 sage leaves⠀ Pinch of salt⠀ ⠀ All all ingredients to a cocktail shaker and shake with ice to chill. Luckily, my friends over at Maker’s Mark whisky want to give you some fall-inspired juleps to sip so you can still celebrate the fastest two minutes in Sports in true southern style (with a julep in-hand) They sent me (and some of my other blogger buddies), a box with some horse race goodies and the following items: cinnamon, star anise, and a handful of syrups (mint, cran, vanilla , hazelnut, and noisette.) We were asked to pick at least two of those items to use in our juleps, and I went with THREE—vanilla syrup, cinnamon, and star anise. 1/3 C maple syrup 1 T vanilla bean paste (extract acceptable if paste isn’t available) 1 C water
– rooms are ultra sanitized with an electrostatic sprayer and then sealed with a sticker and staff won’t enter unless requested – social distancing is encouraged everywhere, especially in the casino where every other slot machine is blocked off, only three are allowed at table games, and they’re SANITIZING THE PLAYING CHIPS – Because we felt safe, we took advantage of the chance to enjoy some much-needed down time to enjoy the hotel, part of which included (a really delicious) breakfast in bed*, time by the pool in a private cabana, and meals at their restaurants. Their hotel pool, DARE, is usually a “day club”, but it’s currently only open to hotel guests. Horseshoe BC gets my stamp of approval … just make sure to be a good human if/when you go … as we should all be doing, be respectful of others when you’re in public, wear a mask, wash your hands, keep your distance … and don’t be an asshole.
🐝 SAVE THE BEES … WHILE DRINKING WHISKY 🥃⠀ ⠀ I’m all abuzz … just sitting here sipping on a cocktail I just made using Aberfeldy and honey (recipe below) and reading about their Bee Informed Partnership. ⠀ ⠀ For this partnership, the scotch label teamed up with local beekeepers across the US to “improve honeybee colony health and increase colony survivorship.” What a sweet partnership!⠀ ⠀ BUZZ BUZZ⠀ 2 oz Aberfeldy 12 Year Scotch Whisky⠀ 1 oz lemon juice⠀ .75 oz cinnamon-honey syrup⠀ ⠀ Combine Aberfeldy, lemon, and syrup in a shaker and shake with ice until well chilled. Strain over fresh ice and garnish with a lemon.⠀ ⠀ *cinnamon-honey syrup: boil 1 cup water with four cinnamon sticks. Let sit for 10 minutes and stir in honey until incorporated. Allow to cool before using in your cocktail. (Best if cinnamon sticks are kept in overnight.)
