National Sleep Awareness Week

I don’t know about you, but I can’t remember the last time I got a solid seven to eight hours of sleep. Throughout high school and college, I was that kid falling asleep as the teacher spoke and only waking up to hear the sound of the bell or the squeal of the chairs along the tile floor, signaling that class was done. I am one of those people who love falling asleep with the television running or with my cell phone right next to my bed, but all of our devices give off blue-light which can severely affect our body, especially our brains, ability to switch off for the night and rest. Those are the nights that I end up waking up and falling asleep repeatedly and I feel drained the following morning, which makes it hard to get through the day.

This particular birthday is not one that I was looking forward to celebrating, but I am trying to embrace the day and the fact that I am one year older, smarter, wiser, etc. Since losing my job, I’ve been so bummed out about all of the things that I am missing out on doing in life — getting my own apartment again, saving money, finding love, — all those things that I have But, if I have learned anything during the last year it’s to let go of the feeling like you’re missing out (FOMO) and start creating adventures, journey toward excitement, take the steps necessary to walk towards your dreams. When it comes time to pick a high school, pick one where YOU feel most comfortable, not where your older sister did.

Each chapter focuses on a different category of “unruliness”: Serena Williams (too strong), Melissa McCarthy (too fat), Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer (too gross), Nicki Minaj (too slutty), Madonna (too old), Kim Kardashian (too pregnant), Hillary Clinton (too shrill), Caitlyn Jenner (too queer), Jennifer Weiner (too loud), and Lena Dunham (too naked). I haven’t had and do not plan on having children, but I know plenty of people that have had children and they all love being pregnant – as much as they feel like their body is no longer their own and as overwhelming as everything that comes with pregnancy It was the media that created the coveted “Bump Watch” among celebrities which incubated this terrifying need for the “cute” pregnancy bump, which later became a thing to be styled, discussed, and photographed by the media for the entire world to judge. Well, the world judged Kim’s pregnancy and said “Sorry, but this isn’t good for marketing or publicity for the show which only fed into her anxiety and sadness and, in my unprofessional and non-medical opinion, probably contributed to all of the medical issues that came with her pregnancy.

It’s March…Again!

so all month, I’m going to be sharing some of my favorite tips and tricks for falling asleep or creating a calming atmosphere in my sleep space! I didn’t realize it when the month started, but I entered the boxing ring without any wraps, no gloves, and the hits just kept coming. I found new ways to improve the quality of my sleep by leaving my phone far away from my bed, taking my Sugar Bear Hair Sleep Vitamins every single night, keeping the room cooler than normal, and listening to sleep meditations as I am settling into bed each night. I’ve taken steps to schedule journaling time into my mornings, Aaptiv sleep meditations at night, and I am working on cleaning up enough space in my room so that I can get back to doing Yoga in the afternoons.

A day off from work doesn’t mean a day off from working out. I started off with a nice stretch and then a high impact routine for the evening with @aaptiv . Progress Yourself w/Akeem (31 minutes) - 4 moves for the warm-up: Jump Squats,Split lunge jumps, burpees, and plank push-ups. Another workout, conquered! @aaptiv came in clutch tonight! I started with the Daily Essentials full body stretch and then moved into Dominate the Work (aka a full body strength training workout with dumbbells) = 30 minutes total, which is my daily goal! 3 rounds, 4 different moves for 30 seconds, with 30 second rests between each move. - Squats with a torso rotation and then shoulder press with weights - Reverse Fly with weights - Dumbbell Lunges with Bicep Curls - Leg lifts, chest fly, with weights They recommended that beginners use 8lb weights, but the second largest I have is 5lbs so I used those for tonight. Did what I could on the treadmill tonight, so I’m excited to say - Another workout, conquered! 💪🏻 I did need to ice my shins tonight.
