Chickpea Tuna from #BodyHarmonyBook by @bonberi As a huge tuna salad lover, this chickpea version is a game-changer. I could eat it every day! Something about the combination of dill and smashed meaty chickpeas makes it weirdly reminiscent of tuna. I'm honestly okay with that, because it's my favorite weather, but I'm starting to miss all the fresh-baked goodies!  I finished my stash of freezer pretzels a bit ago, and this is definitely on my list of things to bake again soon! Tuna and Mayo Sandwich with Yuenyeung Milk Tea and some thoughts I never had a "lunchbox moment." Even when I was too young to pack my own, my lunch usually included a ham sandwich, a baked char siu bao and a Vita juice box if I was feeling particularly Chinese, or one time, a few hard-boiled quail eggs that I shared with friends because they thought it cool and I hated eggs at the time. Instead, the part of myself I had to hide at school was that I FREAKING LOVE TUNA SANDWICHES. My mom refused to let me bring them, maybe she knew better. As a result, tuna and mayo on white bread with mugfuls of hot milk tea became my favorite weekend breakfast, and now, a comfort meal. I did substitute the usual sweet milky tea this time with my second favorite cha chaan teng/Hong Kong cafe drink, Yuenyeung Milk Tea, the first being lemon tea. A mixture of coffee and tea, I like to make mine by brewing my tea in a full mug of mediocre coffee instead of hot water before adding a tablespoon of sugar and just enough whole milk so that the drink is still dark and isn't fully opaque. Coffee adds a depth of smoky bitterness to drinks that I find completely captivating and can't get enough of! I don't think of myself as lucky or unlucky to never have been made fun of for my lunches, because I think there are plenty of other encounters outside of the lunchroom that were formative. I think it's so easy for everyone to group a diaspora's experience into one great monolith, that we should take care to remind ourselves that everyone's experience is different, that we all deserve to have our stories heard, and that just because someone's family recipes aren't what you envisioned, doesn't mean it's not authentic. Winter Squash Risotto with Chewy Rice Cakes from #KoreanAmerican by @ericjoonho The funny thing that ends up happening when one who loves to cook lives in an apartment with limited storage space, is that kitchen stuff can end up in unexpected places. Food processor and serving platters stashed with the sweaters in the bedroom closet, drinks and tinned fish under the lone and overflowing bookshelf, and sometimes, winter squash become decorative gourds on the coffee table. Every so often, I forget about these things because they're not in the kitchen when I cook. Which is why, a couple weeks ago, I finally cut into a kabocha I bought at the end of January. It was surprisingly okay! Hence, this unseasonable risotto. Extra comforting from the squash purée, the chewy dduk were such a fun highlight I found myself looking forward to as I was eating.
