🙌WHAT A YEAR! 🙌 2022 was the year we needed. After the pandemic and then Avery’s cancer journey, this year was healing. First and foremost, AVERY WAS HOME and CANCER FREE! That, in and of itself, is enough. But, on top of that we were finally able to travel again. We were able to introduce Avery to more family members! We flew to Minnesota to meet Avery’s donor and his wonderful mom! ❤️ The girls have been able to bond. We’ve been able to be together. We were able to just laugh and play. For me, it’s a time of reflection. Looking back over the year, celebrating our wins, moving past our defeats, and savoring all the moments in between. Our biggest win this year? Avery being home – and cancer free! 🙌 Beyond that, everything else almost seems trivial. And through every high and low, my constant is my husband. He insisted on a Santa Claus 🎅🏼 suit because he wanted to surprise the kids. Why? Because he loves to make people smile. To make them laugh. Make them happy. And even though neither of us are big 𝑔𝑖𝑓𝑡𝑠 people, he bought me several this year. Why? Because he has the biggest servant’s heart. He lives to serve others; especially me. Admittedly, I’m spoiled rotten 🫣 – by him. For the last decade, he’s continued to learn all he can about my mental illnesses. He helps keep me grounded and normally knows what I need before I do. One of his main love languages is physical touch, whereas mine is quality time. The happy medium:🫱🏻‍🫲🏼massages. This crazy guy not only bought a massage table and all the things to go with it, but he signed up for a course to learn how to massage 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑙𝑦. When I told him he was 𝑒𝑥𝑡𝑟𝑎 (as they always accuse me of being), he said he simply wants to help me relax and be well. I truly feel undeserving most days. There’s still a void in our family this holiday season, but we’re making the best of it. Having this guy by my side keeps me moving forward and focused on what’s in front of me. Hoping that whatever your holiday looks like, it’s a good one for you. The pandemic + Avery’s cancer diagnosis meant we needed to stay home to keep us safe… and available to help with her care. Now that she’s doing well, we can’t wait to travel and explore more – including Avery and her sister in as many trips as possible. We’ve tried to show our kids how big the world is and how much there is to see and learn out there; now it’s time to show the grandkids too. Borges, By The Sea Our kids were so done with us after a whirlwind week through Europe. We started in Sweden and made our way down to Italy in just 6 days! But, we had reasons. 1️⃣ We had a small window of time slotted for our travels 2️⃣ We wanted to spend as much of that time as possible in Greece, so had to hurry and get there I spent months planning and sorting through so many villas to find the perfect one for our stay. And we found it! Not only was the host the best we’ve ever encountered on our journeys, but everything about our villa was perfect! In fact, the views were more than we could have asked for. Just stunning sea views. The location was great, beds were comfortable, and it had all we needed. Even cold bottles of water. 😊 If you’re ever in Mykonos, check out @calypsosunsetvillas! Jaci loves “Mamma Mia,” and, because Colby and I had visited it before, we wanted to take Jaci. Both Jaci and Joeli enjoyed the interactive attractions and band memorabilia, so it was worth the stop. 🇬🇧 Next, we flew to London to check off bucket list items: Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, riding a double-decker bus. Not to mention, we met Jaden there. This was a secret she and I kept for over a month! 🇫🇷 A train to Paris was our next adventure. Our goal there was to see the Eiffel Tower both at night and during the day. 🇮🇹 Another plane; this time to Rome. Again, it was a bucket list place: the Colosseum. Although it rained on us halfway through our tour of the Colosseum, we saw much of the historic city and it was incredible! 🇬🇷 The last leg of our Europe trip was Greece. We wanted to spend the bulk of our time here, hence the rush through the other cities. We had one night in Athens, so we walked as much of the city as we could. We saw Acropolis and other historic ruins throughout the city. 💙 Finally, Mykonos. It was everything we hoped for and much more. We saw the Flour Mill Windmills, Armenistis Lighthouse, and several churches. Swam in the Aegean Sea. Took TONS of pictures and simply enjoyed the views. We came. We saw. We tasted. We learned. We discovered. We explored. We did as much as we could. 💙WANNA SEE SOMETHING PRETTY?💙 Okay, Rome is just beautiful! We walked around much of the city and took far too many pictures, ate pizza + gelato, and took in the history. By the end of our walk, we were exhausted and soaked from the rain, but it was a successful day. From the Colosseum to the Trevi Fountain (shown here) to the Pantheon, there was so much to see. ⛲️ But the water of the Trevi Fountain was crystal clear and vibrantly blue. Keeping it a secret from both of them (especially the older one) wasn’t easy, but we did it! 💛T•H•A•N•K•F•U•L💛 There’s a lot I’m thankful for and like about my life, but this one holds a truly special place. Last year at this time she was just beginning to fight her toughest battles yet. Diagnosed with Leukemia at 7 weeks old, and the chemotherapy she went through, was nothing compared to her bone marrow transplant. November brought a lot of challenges and every side effect possible. She had several ICU stays and we almost lost her the week of Thanksgiving. Receiving that Monday morning call asking us to get the entire family to the hospital ASAP will forever haunt us. So, if you ask me what I’m most thankful for, it’s her. Her smile. Her personality. Her joy. Her donor. #Partner I am partnering with Merck as part of a study on vaccine hesitancy and all thoughts and opinions are my own. I feel like, as parents, we all know just how fast time flies; especially when it comes to our kids growing up. Also, as parents, we want to do anything and everything we can to keep our kids safe. We want to make the best informed decisions for our children and their care. Knowing how sensitive a subject vaccines can be, especially now, I want to explain why the HPV vaccine for my children was important to me. Just years before these two were born, I had a terrible health scare. One that required an immediate LEEP surgery to take most of the opening of my cervix. One that my doctor wasn’t sure would allow me to have more children. Or, if I became pregnant, one that wouldn’t allow me to carry them to term. But, thanks to my amazing doctor, I was able to carry these two, plus one more, to term and complete our growing family. Having experienced HPV myself, I fully understand the importance of the HPV vaccine. In fact, Hispanic, such as myself, and Black women have higher rates of HPV-related cancers than other women. Not to mention, 4 out of 5 people will have had an HPV infection at some point in their life. The HPV vaccine also protects against 9 different types of HPV that cause cancer in men and women. Considering our family history of cancer, we take all of this very seriously. The CDC recommends that the HPV vaccine be given between the ages of 11 and 12 and it has been found to be safe in several studies. Most importantly, it has been shown to be 95% effective in preventing cervical cancer in women. I’m grateful every day for the care I received that allowed me to move forward, have more children, and continue to be healthy today.
