If you know me, you know I’m a very emotional person. I’m the literal embodiment of “wear your heart on your sleeve.” An empath if you will. ⠀ .⠀ In these last few days, months, years, decades, I continue to become emotionally overwhelmed with the societal expectation for me to be QUIET. And by God, I was not created as such. ⠀ .⠀ Because why talk about how minorities are oppressed at the dinner table? Kids locked up in cages at the border. Maybe ask why our institutions, yes the ones you work for, are built to keep Black People and all minorities oppressed. Why not? Because it makes us UNCOMFORTABLE. ⠀ .⠀ But do you know what’s even more uncomfortable than having those conversations? Watching George Floyd plead for his life & get murdered, in broad daylight, by the people meant to protect us. Seeing countless headlines of Black lives, taken from us, far too soon. ⠀ .⠀ Now, as a human being, I support the movement for the basic human right to be treated equally. But as a Panamanian-American, I know the very existence of my people come from Black people, who too were enslaved and looted. And even more so, as a granddaughter, a neice, a cousin, a friend and significant other of beautiful black people, I can no longer let society dictate my own oppressed behaviors. ⠀ .⠀ Your fight is my fight.
