The difference between Hiking, Trekking, Mountaineering and Rock Climbing

A lot of people tend to use Hiking, Trekking, Mountaineering and Rock Climbing as if they were synonyms. Why understand the difference between Hiking, Trekking, Mountaineering and Rock Climbing? Because Trekking is usually 4 days or longer, it requires a certain level of physical activity and serious training before you dive into it. Rock climbing is a sport in which climbers climb up natural (or artificial) rock walls following a defined or non defined route while tied to a rope system to prevent potential falls.

Backpacking to the Meadows of the Gila Wilderness

The drive from metro Phoenix to Grapevine Campground in the Gila Wilderness is roughly 6 hours. Here is the address you want to drive to in order to get to JJ Corral’s trailhead: NM-15, Glenwood, NM 88039 TJ Corral to The Meadows via Bear Canyon The hike starts at TJ Corral on trail 729 heading north for about 2 miles until coming to the junction with Big Bear Canyon trail #164. At this point, you take a left and head west/northwest along the rim for roughly 3.5 miles until arriving at the junction with The Meadows Trail #28.

Grinnell Glacier- The most beautiful hike in GNP

Coming to the end of Swiftcurrent Lake, you’ll find a triple fork, head left and you’ll just march out onto a nice dock (which we believed to be the landing point for the Many Glacier Ferry), this dock will provide you with a nice final glimpse of Swiftcurrent Lake prior to continuing on to Lake Josephine. Bear spray: you are in bear country and there is no guarantee whether you’ll encounter a bear on this trail or not. Bear bell: it is recommended to carry a bear bell especially if you are hiking solo and there aren’t a lot of people on the trail. It is very important to make a lot of noise while in bear country, and if you don’t want to be that crazy hiker who is shouting all the time, then carry a bear bell.

PAUL RYKEN- Full-time carry-on only traveler

After meeting our first guests for “World Traveler Series” Emma & Trevor, I am excited for you guys to meet our second guest PAUL RYKEN. We run a website called Minimalist Journeys, where we help others with tips and advice around simple living and sustainable travel. After a three month backpacking trip around the world in 2012, we slowly embarked on a life-changing journey: from assessing our values and discovering minimalism to a life on the road full of amazing and humbling experiences. Needing to catch a red-eye flight from Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, we took a taxi to get us to the airport, about 30km away.
