The record for oldest Oscar nominee is now a three-way tie

With her Oscar nomination this morning, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” costume designer Ann Roth ties the record for oldest Academy Award nominee, at 89 years old. The Tony-winning, Emmy-nominated designer has amassed hundreds of film, theater and TV credits in her nearly seven decade-long career. Roth ties the record with screenwriter James Ivory and the late Agnès Varda who were both 89 when they were nominated for Academy Awards in 2018. On the acting side, the late Christopher Plummer remains the oldest ever acting nominee when he was nominated for a supporting role in 2018

Chloé Zhao makes history as the first woman of color nominated for a directing Oscar

In an unusual year marred by a global pandemic and theater closures nationwide, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has nominated two female filmmakers for a directing Oscar, marking the first time more than one woman has been nominated in the same year. Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”) and Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”) have been nominated this year alongside David Fincher Last month, Zhao won a Golden Globe for her work on “Nomadland,” which also won the prize for best picture, drama, making her the first woman of color, the first woman of Asian descent and just the second female director to do so. She took over from Phoebe Waller-Bridge as showrunner for the second season of “Killing Eve” before making her feature filmmaking debut as writer, director and producer on “Promising Young Woman.” Female directors have been shut out of the Oscar nominations since 2018, when Greta Gerwig was nominated for her debut, “Lady Bird.

Riz Ahmed is the first Muslim nominated for lead actor Oscar

Riz Ahmed made history Monday as the first Muslim nominated for the Oscar for lead actor with the recognition for his role in “Sound of Metal. Actor Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar when he took home the statuette for supporting actor for “Moonlight” in 2017 and won the same prize in 2019 for “Green Book.” Ahmed previously was the first Muslim, and first Asian, to win a lead acting Emmy in 2017 when he picked up the prize for lead actor in a limited series or movie for “ In “Sound of Metal,” Ahmed plays Ruben, a rock-and-roll drummer and recovering addict whose life is sent into a tailspin when he loses his hearing. For the role, Ahmed has been nominated for the Golden Globe, SAG Award, Spirit Award and BAFTA for lead actor.
