IT IS A HOUSE DIVIDED! The last time I was in New York City, Knox and I took a food tour in Greenwich Village. The guide told us his favorite pizza joint was called Joe’s Pizza but because we had so many people, he took us to his next favorite, John’s of Bleecker Street. On this trip, Howard and I decided to try both. I loved the complexity of the sauce and the fresh tangy cheese of John’s- it’s the best pizza I’ve ever eaten. Worth every calorie and carb. Howard liked the super thin, floppy pizza at Joe’s. You can’t do wrong with either one. Have you been to either? We arrived in Loreto, Mexico in Baja California Sur. We spent our winter break holiday discovering the city of Bend, Oregon, and Mt. Bachelor, which was about 30 minutes away. There was a light flurry of snow, enough for us to ski through powder during our runs but nothing like what happened in Mammoth and Lake Tahoe, so I was sad for those who couldn't enjoy their break in the snow but so grateful that we got so lucky. Bend is a charming little town with the most talented chefs. We enjoyed incredible breakfasts (late) and dinners and even got the chance for a date night since the kids are older now and all that mountain play wore them out. For those who aren't familiar with Mt. Bachelor, here are a few quick facts: Mt. Bachelor has 4,318 acres of lift-accessible terrain with 360-degree views and descents from the top of its 9,065’ volcanic peak. We didn’t get to go to the top because the snow had shut that lift down. Mt. Bachelor also features five terrain parks, 56 km of groomed cross-country trails, snowshoeing, tubing, and sled dog rides. On our last day playing on Mt. Bachelor, we went to the Nordic Skiing center by West Valley Lodge and went snowshoeing. I didn’t realize there are actual trails for this. The Nordic Center gave us a map with trails outlined just like the ski trails. When I originally told the boys we were doing this, they were less than excited. But it turned out to be a very calming and beautiful experience. The quiet on the mountains extended into the trees. You could almost hear the deep silence. Our conversations felt cushioned by the crisp air. I realized I could do this everyday. It felt so good to be in the clean outdoors and the snow draped trees felt magical. The boys enjoyed themselves too. Is Mt. Bachelor better than Mammoth? Only if you don’t like crowds and love craft food! Only a 30 minute drive from Bend, Oregon, the most common question when I told people we were coming here was where’s that? It’s a place where the snow is as plentiful as the many groomed trails. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous especially with the snow coming down. I hadn’t been skiing since the winter before the covid closures. The boys had gone last year. My body has changed and I wasn’t sure my brain remembered how to ski. After a few runs though, I got more comfortable and by the end of the day, I was ripping down the slopes. The boys accidentally went on a black Diamond run and managed to successfully get down. Mt. Bachelor has 4,318 acres of lift-accessible terrain with 360-degree views and descents from the top of its 9,065’ volcanic peak. We didn’t get to see it because the snow had shut that lift down.
