Everyoneโ€™s got to have that one cocktail they come across when theyโ€™re a ways into their libation journey thatโ€™s like โ€œWTF? How did I not know about this sooner?!โ€ ๐Ÿคฏ I found mine today - and itโ€™s a Fernet Sour. I love a good sour cocktail (if ya couldnโ€™t tell ๐Ÿ˜‰) and I REALLY love a Last Word. Itโ€™s in my top 5 favorites. The Fernet Sour reminds me of a Last Word in many ways with its own unique flair. To me, the taste was a bit more complex because of the Fernet, but with that same kind of balance with the Green Chartreuse that you would get in a Last Word. The one twist I made to this was to add a few drops of Spiced Cherry Bitters, because I love the effect a Maraschino Cherry has on a Last Word. It went swimmingly here. This is one I will definitely be adding to my rotation when Iโ€™m splurging with my Green Chartreuse (when will the shortage end?!). Cheers to the weekend yโ€™all, check out the recipe below. Happy Groundhog Day ๐Ÿฆซ! Such a great tradition, to let a little Groundhog tell us whether to expect 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring ๐Ÿ˜…. I actually did a little reading this morning about this day, and did you know itโ€™s been an official thing since 1887? Pretty crazy! I also read that historically he has seen his shadow (meaning 6 more weeks of winter) something like 85% of the time ๐Ÿ˜ฌ, which he did again this year. Texas, Iโ€™m sure that is NOT something you want to hear right now. Whether you believe in his weather-forecasting skills or just enjoy reading about Punxsutawney Philโ€™s little excursion, I thought it would be a good day for our โ€œThirst Edโ€ to cover a classic cocktail that is easy to sip on no matter what he sees. And I chose the Whisky Sour. I absolutely love these drinks, and pretty much every riff of one that Iโ€™ve tried. For today Iโ€™ve crafted a โ€œWinter Warmerโ€ and a โ€œSpring Flingโ€ so we have options for either way forward, which translates to an Apricot Fig Whisky Sour and a Strawberry Mint Whisky Sour. They are so very different in flavor but both absolutely divine. Recipes are below, and will stick around in the Thirst Ed highlights. Not sure about yโ€™all but itโ€™s about time for a mid-week pick me up โšก. And for those who made it through Dry (or Damp) January, itโ€™s also time to celebrate!! Lemonade may have been something youโ€™ve been sipping on throughout January, but today she gets an upgrade and gets boozified ๐Ÿฅ‚. One of the things I love about the Lavender Lemonade by JustMade is that they use honey as their sweetener, so I made some blueberry honey syrup to use here. It works so well, and gives it just a little bit of a different flavor. It also gives it more of a cold-weather feel in my opinion, which I know a lot of my friends in Texas are in need of today โ„๏ธ. The lavender is enhanced with some Lavender Gin, as well as color from our Empress Gin ๐Ÿฆ‹. Yesterday my husband and I went on an adventureโ€ฆ to a grocery store in a nearby town ๐Ÿ˜… Now if saying that out loud doesnโ€™t make you feel like youโ€™ve aged, I donโ€™t know what will ๐Ÿคช It was truly exciting. I do love our town and for the most part, the local stores carry what we need. But there are a handful of herbs and other ingredients that just donโ€™t get stocked this time of year, including mint ๐ŸŒฟ I have been missing mint like crazy. And they had it!! I wish I could have gone crazy, bought a ton and frozen it - but thatโ€™s just not how those things work so alas, if you see a lot of mint this week, now you know why ๐Ÿ‘. Today I opted to start with a complex yet refreshing vodka tipple that used the Nightbloom No. 2 Vodka, which is infused with 3 different kinds of citrus, along with our Munyonโ€™s Paw Paw Orange Liqueur, lime + pineapple juices, and a fiery ginger syrup. Muddle a bit of mint in there, then throw some in as garnish and voila!! It was Mint to Be. Truly - like, I drove over 2 hours for this stuff. Not a leaf will go to waste. Itโ€™s been a while since I dipped into my Amaro stash, but today seemed like the perfect day to remedy that โ˜€๏ธ. The Amaro Santoni is vastly different than any other Amaro currently on my shelf, itโ€™s lighter, brighter, and has more of a peppery, rhubarb taste to it. Immediately thoughts of grapefruit came to mind, along with lime, strawberry, hibiscus and our Alpine Distilling Gin, which has notes of cardamom and citrus peel amongst other fabulous flavors ๐Ÿ˜‹. Putting all of this together in a martini glass may seem like a lot, but I felt like these players didnโ€™t overpower one another - it was like they each took a turn with my taste buds, creating a lasting finish with each sip. Today is my mommaโ€™s birthday, and since we donโ€™t get to celebrate in person this year, I thought we could cheers in spirit with one of her favorite cocktail combos - bourbon and ginger ๐Ÿฅณ. But thatโ€™s not all! It is a birthday after all, and itโ€™s okay to be a little โœจextraโœจ. Out comes the Apple Pear Barmalade, the Lemon Juice, and even some Cider and weโ€™re ready to get the party started. The Ginger entered the drink in 2 ways, in the form of our Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueur and Blue Stem Botanicals Ginger Tincture. I actually got her 2 of that tincture because she loves it and it really is that good! To finish, I wasnโ€™t sure what kind of herb would go best but decided to try basil and it is absolutely spot on ๐ŸŒฟ. Life is just better with a twist, right?! In this case, weโ€™re talking about the twist you add to a ๐ŸŠcocktail ๐Ÿ‹, which happens to be the theme for Week 4 of our J/S Thirst Ed(ucation). I have to be honest, up until a few years ago I wouldnโ€™t have known or cared if a cocktail came with a twist, but now if a recipe calls for one (and sometimes even when it doesnโ€™t), I add it!! Itโ€™s amazing what a twist can bring to any drink, both aesthetically and in flavor. The Negroni stood out as one that absolutely MUST come with a twist, usually orange for me, but it can certainly be lemon depending on the riff of the day. I love my Negronis with a good Dry Gin like Oxley, or Botanist, and with Carpano Antica as the Sweet Vermouth. Thereโ€™s really no replacing the Campari, I feel like thatโ€™s the signature part of this classic, so it typically stays. Today weโ€™re sticking to the classic, so letโ€™s call it #classiccocktailthursday (like the good olโ€™ days!)๐Ÿ‘. Our little snowstorm ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ yesterday turned out to be just the perfect amount to romp around and play in (the ๐Ÿถs love it), and I just had to get out and get my drink photos in the elements today. Decided on a Jungle Bird riff using the Mango Habanero Barmalade in place of demerara syrup, and am fittingly calling this the โ€œSnow Birdโ€. I love the kick you get from the habanero and the alteration of flavor you get in general by changing just the one ingredient. Itโ€™s almost moreโ€ฆ tiki if that could happen!! The Jungle Bird is my favorite tiki drink, like, ever, and this one did not disappoint. Weโ€™re also loving our @islandgetaway rum - we may not be on an island, but the vibe is there. Today, and really January in general has been slammed at work. On top of that, weโ€™re in for a day or two of pretty crazy winter storms โ„๏ธ which makes me even happier to know we soaked up every ounce of โ˜€๏ธshine that we could yesterday. Made even more perfect with our Munyonโ€™s Paw Paw Liqueur that came to us straight from the Sunshine State!! The bottle came with a few recipes to help get started and a Paloma riff was one of them. I love trying different Paloma riffs, so we took it and ran, and made one that was spicy, smooth, and rich with flavor. I loved adding more of this liqueur to our drink because the flavor is so fresh and unique that it deserves to shine. The compliment from the grapefruit and lime was just what the sunshine doctor ordered. So without further adieu, our Spicy Paw Pawโ€™s Paloma ladies and gentlemen! Sunday Funday mountain style ๐Ÿ”๏ธ๐Ÿ‘! I made this Cherry Gin Sour this afternoon and my husband and I literally fought over every last sip. I know balance is a very subjective thing to say when talking drinks, but this truly gave it a new definition. The flavors of cherry, lemon and gin, smoothed out with the egg white was everything I could have hoped for when setting out today. The cherry flavor came from our Ginja9 Sour Cherry Liqueur in addition to our R.W. Knudsen Just Cherry Juice, which is fresh and tasty all on its own. I absolutely love the color here too, it really didnโ€™t disappoint in any way! Thirst Ed(ucation) - Week 3! To follow up last weekโ€™s subject of when to shake vs. stir, figured it would be a good time to throw a ๐Ÿ”ง in things with the Martini ๐Ÿธ. There are all kinds of martini variations out there, but when it comes to the classic version - using your typical vodka or gin with some dry vermouth and maybe some olive juice or a twist, the jury is out on whether it should be shaken or stirred. Following the rules we talked about last week, you would want to stir a martini, but I gotta say, Iโ€™m with Mr. Bond - I like mine shaken and ice cold. Todayโ€™s post I decided to share my 2 favorite martini recipes - a good olโ€™ dirty with blue cheese olives, and a Mexican Martini, which is something I donโ€™t find on a menu often outside of Texas. It strays from the classic recipe a bit, but combines many components of a margarita with a bit of olive brine, and is served up. Itโ€™s frickinโ€™ delicious. Mules are super refreshing, easy to drink cocktails that I typically reserve for warmer days ๐Ÿ˜Ž. But not this one, and not today ๐Ÿฅถ. Weโ€™d tried a Mule a while back with the Nightbloom No. 1, which is the more earthy in the Nightbloom lineup, but today opted to give it a go with their No. 2, which is infused with various citrus like mandarin, satsuma, and citrus peel. To make it more cold-weather appropriate, we added in some of our Pomegranate Elderberry Juice by @justmadejuice with the lime, and muddled basil (no mint right now at the store - #mountainlife). I didnโ€™t know if the basil would somehow throw it off but it worked absolutely perfectly here. We topped things with our Bundaberg Ginger Beer, which brought the perfect amount of sweet and flavor we needed to complete this amazing tipple. I love that itโ€™s light while maintaining that rich complexity that makes it a winter warmer as well. Happy Monday! We had a friend visiting over the weekend, and after a few days of celebrating, thought it would be great timing to share my #1 go-to mocktail recipe ๐Ÿ‘. I like things with a lot of flavor, so this starts with a Grapefruit Shrub, which then gets a healthy dose of Apple Cider Vinegar and lime juice, and is topped with a sparkling water. The vinegar and shrub give this a kick that I just love ๐Ÿซถ, in addition to all the other health benefits you can find about both shrubs and ACV.
