Your brain doesn't know the difference between reality and fantasy, so when you bring into your mind's eye the image of a space where you feel calm and safe, your body begins to respond to that by relaxing. ⁣⁣ .⁣⁣ When you feel that sense of calm through all of your senses, you create a strong message to your body that you don't have to be on guard and it is safe to relax. ⁣⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .

Self-soothing is a tool to help calm the anxious brain. ⁣ .⁣ Pushing worry or anxious thoughts away can lead to frustration and to the thoughts getting louder or more persistent⁣ .⁣ Acknowledge the worry⁣ .⁣ Thank the anxious thought⁣ .⁣ Respond with firmness and compassion⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .

We all know that sometimes it's hard to ignore the worst-case scenario. What if this happens? What if that goes wrong? Even when things are going well, it's all too easy to imagine how they could go very wrong. But, while it's important to be prepared for the worst, worst-case scenario thinking can be counter-productive.⁣⁣ .

It seems like it happens completely out of the blue. ⁣ .⁣ You can't throw like before, you're missing "easy' shots, you can't get your body to do the flip like it used to....⁣ .⁣ So you're told to try harder, visualize yourself making it, "get over it" & practice more⁣ .⁣ The issue persists⁣ .⁣ Here's why⁣ .⁣ Trauma memories accumulate in your brain. So it might not be one moment that causes you to choke, but rather a build-up of falls, hits, broken bones, embarrassing moments, and being yelled at and shamed. ⁣ .⁣ Then something is the last straw and boom, you are out of flow and can't perform⁣ .⁣ We have to address the BUILDUP and not just the momentary issue. The unconscious or deep brain controls nearly 98% of our behavior and daily action (Carter, 2014) ⁣⁣ .⁣⁣ If you aren't actively clearing the memory networks in the deep brain from old traumas/injury/fear, you are then functioning unconsciously in a state of hyperarousal, trauma, fight or flight rather than in flow. ⁣ .⁣⁣ You train physically to perform in flow.
