Another book down. My goal this year was to spend less time on my phone and more time reading. I’m at 18 books for the year 🤯 so I’d say I’m doing a good job - but I could definitely still be better about screen time. What are you currently reading? #jeaninecummins #bookstagram #booklover #booktok #bookworm #bookaddict #readmorebooks #readreadread #americandirt #ecofriendly #sustainability #librarylove #lowwaste #zerowaste

Sitting here feeling very grateful to live where I live 😌 Sometimes I forget how beautiful the northeast is (especially during the winter when I’m stuck inside), but this warm weather is reminding of all the reasons I love where I call home 🥰 What’s your favorite part of the place you call home? (Photos are from New York, Maine, Vermont, and Connecticut) #northeastcoast #newyork #upstateny #vermont #connecticut #maine #travel #hiking #kayaking #naturephotography #naturelovers #getoutside #getoutdoors #newengland

I switched to a scrubber a few years ago and I find they work better, last longer, and don’t get as smelly 🤷🏻‍♀️ What do you think? #Ecofriendly #eco #zerowaste #zerowasteliving #wastefree #wastefreeliving #sustainable #sustainability #sustainableliving #zerowastekitchen #zerowastehome #zerowastelifestyle #zerowastetips #zerowastelife #zerowastejourney #zerowastefood #ny #nyc #nycblogger

If you are looking for a good book to share with your kiddos around caring for the environment, this book by @kmcintoshwrites is outstanding! The book highlights the impact of individual efforts, problem-solving, utilizing local environmental laws and protections, and touches a bit on grieving a loved one in a really precious way. It was a delightful read with a (spoiler alert) victory for the planet and environmental education at the end. Make sure to go show @kmcintoshwrites some love! #childrensbooks #childrensbook #youngreaders #sustainability #ecofriendly #ecobook #ecobooks #booklover #bookstagram #readmorebooks

Hot take: I don’t think plastic utensils are more convenient 🤷🏻‍♀️ they kind of suck at replacing normal silverware I have a set of travel utensils that I got from @rei that I used to keep in my desk when I worked in an office (that only used disposable items 🙄) and now I keep them in my backpack for travel! They work better than single use, and let’s be honest, a fork is not very hard to clean and reuse. For affordability options, places like thrift stores almost always have a section with loose silverware where you can grab a set for around $1! Keep it wrapped in a cloth or in a bag for when you’re on the go ☺️ What do you think about this swap? #Ecofriendly #eco #zerowaste #zerowasteliving #wastefree #wastefreeliving #sustainable #sustainability #sustainableliving #zerowastekitchen #zerowastehome #zerowastelifestyle #zerowastetips #zerowastelife #zerowastejourney #zerowastefood #ny #nyc #nycblogger

About a year ago, I shared that most eco-friendly deodorants give me a horrible allergic reaction. The incredible women who run @bareelementsllc reached out and let me know it was likely the baking soda causing the reaction and let me try their deodorant instead. Ya’ll - it’s the best sustainable deodorant I’ve ever tried. It goes on smooth and lasts all day without flaking off and I’ve had 0 reactions ever since switching. In fact, I loved it so much that we worked together to create a groundzerowaste deodorant that smells like oranges ☺️🍊 If you’ve run into the same issues with sustainable deodorant, or want to support a phenomenal small business, there’s a link in my bio or you can check out their Instagram page and show them some love 😊 Okay, that’s my schpiel! #Ecofriendly #eco #zerowaste #zerowasteliving #wastefree #wastefreeliving #sustainable #sustainability #sustainableliving #zerowastehome #zerowastelifestyle #zerowastetips #zerowastelife #zerowastejourney #womanowned #womanownedbusiness #womanownedsmallbusiness #sustainablebusiness #smallbusiness

Another book finished! This one had a slow start, but by the end I couldn’t put it down. A really precious read about the value of relationships ☺️ I’d give it 4.5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #bookstagram #booktok #book #booklover #bookreview #bookrecommendations #readmorebooks #librarybooks #sustainability #ecofriendly

What are the most common things you see littered? Mine are: lighters, caps, single-use flowers, and bottles #Ecofriendly #eco #zerowaste #zerowasteliving #wastefree #wastefreeliving #sustainable #sustainability #sustainableliving #zerowastekitchen #zerowastehome #zerowastelifestyle #zerowastetips #zerowastelife #zerowastejourney #zerowastefood #ny #nyc #nycblogger

Personally, I think this is one of the easiest swaps you can make. Here are my thoughts: Ziploc bags are expensive. If you use them daily for things like leftovers, packed lunches, marinating, freezing, storage - you’re throwing money away Instead - invest in a few good options that you can reuse again and again. Personally, I prefer containers and silicone bowl cover to reusable sandwich bags. If you are tight on budget, you can almost always find containers at thrift stores or keep them from takeout and reuse them. This month, challenge yourself to keep track of how many plastic bags you use and see if you can start making small changes to switch over #Ecofriendly #eco #zerowaste #zerowasteliving #wastefree #wastefreeliving #sustainable #sustainability #sustainableliving #zerowastekitchen #zerowastehome #zerowastelifestyle #zerowastetips #zerowastelife #zerowastejourney #zerowastefood

I have been an absolute reading fiend lately - mostly because walking to the library has become a little after-work ritual for me ☺️ I give this one a 4⭐️ it was a super cute, easy read that reminded me very much of Love & Other Words (but a little more predictable) #bookstagram #booktok #book #booklover #booknerd #readmorebooks #librarybooks #sustainability

How to Live a Zero Waste Lifestyle

When you start your journey of transitioning to a zero waste lifestyle, you may feel tempted to buy all of the fun zero waste alternatives. Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Repurpose, and if all else fails, Recycle While it’s better than trash, recycling should not be the goal when going zero waste. If you must buy items, try to avoid single-use items or anything with plastic packaging. Once you have used up the single-use items in your home, you can start purchasing reusable or eco-friendly replacements.

Zero Waste or Recycling? What is the True Difference?

If you are recycling items and not throwing them away, is that zero waste? Instead of single-use or short-term items, those of us living zero waste lifestyles opt for items that can be continuously reused. While composting is the best alternative to food waste, and something many zero waste individuals use, there are some other ways you can reduce your food waste. To get started on your zero waste journey, check out month one in our guide to going zero waste.

10 Things You Can Do Today to be More Eco-Friendly

While there are so many different things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint, reduce your waste, and be a better consumer, it’s always best to start small. If you’re ready to go fully zero waste, check out month one of our monthly guide to going zero waste. A super-easy way to reduce energy usage in your home is to switch your old incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs. Look for companies who avoid fast fashion, sell second-hand, use sustainable materials, use recycled materials, pay ethical wages, avoid palm oil, etc.
