✨As you’re reading this, please remember that this post is truly about helping your child to meet their own unique potential & set them up for success more than anything else! ⭐️If your child was born early, it is important to adjust for pre-maturity when looking at this. Ex: child is 18 months but born 3 months early, use 15 month milestones until age 2! ⭐️ And 💥Reminder💥: Just because you’re getting the evaluation does NOT mean that your child will qualify for services. It is truly better to check and see (with an evaluation) than wait and see. When it comes to getting services, I always recommend getting them if you have any concerns ASAP because: ⭐️ The majority of brain development happens between birth- age 3. ⭐️ Can help reduce your little one’s frustrations & make life easier 💕 ⭐️ Can help set them up for success socially, academically & build confidence ⭐️ You have nothing to lose! 💥 Evaluations through your state’s Infant and Toddler Program are free (if in the US) but treatment cost may vary. (Go to https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/actearly/parents/states.html to find your state’s program) 💥 If you would rather go to an outpatient center of if your child did not qualify for early intervention services and you are still concerned, try looking at a local Children’s hospital or googling “speech therapy practice city, state” to find a certified SLP (consider how you want to pay- health insurance, if your child has Medicaid, or if you’d rather opt for private pay) *Most info is from the Rossetti Infant-Toddler Language Scale & The Hawaii Early Learning Profile (HELP) *This list is not all-inclusive of all skills & milestones and is intended to be educational. 💥 This should not be used as a a replacement to rule out a speech-language evaluation! Let me know if this is helpful! ⤵️ and be sure to save for later!📥

I don’t know about you, but as a mom to a 4.5 year old, one of the things I worry about as he grows is what he is being exposed to online. As a mom and a speech-language pathologist, I understand how valuable screentime can be when used appropriately and as a tool for littles ages 2+, however, I also understand how dangerous screentime can be when used independently. Thanks to this app FamiSafe by Wondershare, I now have some peace of mind. Not only can I set screen time limits, but I can also block certain websites, and filter out and detect questionable content. It’s so easy to use and I love that my phone easily pairs up with his device (helllloo location tracking for the future!) The best news is that you can try it for free with the link in my bio + stories (see stories for more!) 📱 Be sure to SAVE 📥 this reel to keep seeing more valuable recommendations and tag another parent who needs to know about this awesome app! 👯‍♀️ . . . #wondershare #famisafe #onlinesafety #speechlanguagepathologist #earlyintervention #dailyparentingtips #speechdelaykids #parentingtipsandtricks #parentingsupport #instaparents #teachingkids #speechtherapist #parentingadvice #momtips #parentinghacks #lifeasmama #momstruggles #parentingwin #learnthroughplay #parentingtips #screentimetips #parentingtips101 #screentimelimits #screentimeforkids #educationalactivities

Does your child have a special interest? ⤵️ Guess what - Research shows that supporting special interests is a great thing!✨ If you want an Autistic or neurotypical child’s language skills to develop, incorporate their special interest(s) by following their lead in play (see yesterday’s post for more info on that!). You can work on requesting various items from a collection, describing / comparing differences between items, conversational skills, turn-taking during play with items, positional concepts, asking / answering questions and more! ⭐️Special interests can help improve peer connections when bonded by a similar special interest ⭐️Children tend to use more complex language when talking about special interests ⭐️Special interests can help guide job/ career choices ⭐️Special interests can improve self-regulation ⭐️They can also help improve a child’s self confidence! Who doesn’t love being an expert in something? Now tell us- how to you use their special interests to promote language or learning? Does your child shut down when you say “Say ball!” or “say more”? Some kids do and some kids don’t. 🤷🏼‍♀️ If your child is (or might be) a late talker… let’s think about reducing the pressure! ✨Here are some simple tips to try to get your child communicating & REDUCE THE PRESSURE!✨ A little bit of sabotage, offering choices, and modeling words the right way can go a longggg way! 🗣 And when it comes to requesting, meet your child at their communication level! Remember, crying is communication & gestures are communication! Actually, ALL behavior is communication. If this was helpful, let me know and feel free to share with a friend! 👯‍♀️ Be sure to save to keep seeing more like this! 📥 Questions about these tips? Little one not talking yet? Of course the FIRST thing you should do if you are concerned, is to schedule a ✨speech & language evaluation.✨ If you have questions about this, let me know! In the meantime, here are somethings you can do to help build their receptive (understanding) and expressive language! 1- Model functional words during play and daily routines, often focusing on one word at a time. Elongate those vowels as these are sometimes easier to imitate. Try “on” and “eat” during the activity shown for example! 2- Incorporate sign language! Research shows this does NOT delay verbal speech & can only help. Plus- why not give them another way to communicate to reduce frustration if you can? 3- Use verbal routines or songs. These are words we say the same way during the same activities in repetition. This increases understanding and later you can pause and see if they’ll “fill in the blank” with a word! Fun fact: my son didn’t roll over consistently until he understood what “roll over” meant through this song 😆 (props to my mother-in-law for coming up with this one!!) 4- If they don’t imitate you, imitate them! Help them realize back and forth exchanges are FUN and that their vocalizations and actions have power. 5- Dont forget to work on body parts! Just because they can’t tell you doesn’t mean they can’t show you. This is important and functional for helping them learn to express pain and I always make it a priority. Questions? Let me know!!⤵️ Tag a mama who is waiting on those first words! 👯 Be sure to follow @learnwithchatterboxes for all the speech and language tips! . . . . . . #slp #speechtherapy #earlyintervention #firsttimemom #instaslp #speechtherapist #instaparents #raisingchildren #parentproblems #lifeasamama #parentingtips #momstruggles #gentleparenting #parenting101 #momtips #playislearning #thisismotherhood #newmom #parentingadvice #milestone #babymilestones #babyreels #milestones #toddlertips #toddlerhacks #parentingtips101 #latetalker #speechdelay #12monthsold #10monthsold

💥EASY💥 ways to teach priority words on a daily basis! The key here is modeling the word in repetition as you do what you’re saying (ex: saying “up” as their body is lifted up/ they’re experiencing “up”) and pausing and ✨waiting✨ The pause is sooo important in order to give your little one space to plan in their little mind what it is they want to say and actually say it! Little brains need time to motor plan & execute that plan. For more tips and strategies on using what you have to teach functional speech and language skills, check out my activity deck! ✨Make play purposeful by working on BASIC CONCEPTS✨ Hi! I’m Caley, a mom & a pediatric speech-language pathologist. I share early language tips to get your little one communicating 💕 The basic concepts at the bottom of this lego pyramid emerge between 1-2 years while the basic concepts towards the the top ⬆️ can take until up to age 6 to develop *(see stories for more info on this- I’ll link a resource) ‼️Don’t forget- your child is probably going to master understanding of these concepts before actually using them in their expressive language. Most basic concepts can be targeted pretty easily during play if the child is engaged and motivated by the activities. 🥰 Lately, I’ve been loving working on basic concepts using @magnatiles, animals/ a play house, Dixie cups & mini objects! Child using mostly nouns? If so, time to teach them to use some verbs! ✨ Have you seen these books before or am I living under a rock?! My Australian friend @proteatherapy posted about these “Busy Books” by Campbell Books in her stories & I had to try because finding good books to teach verbs (action words) can be difficult! Your little one can actually see & feel the verb in action! Verbs are necessary for helping our little ones move to phrases and sentences. Think about it - word combos are usually made up of different TYPES of words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns etc!) To make it receptive: 📚 “Let’s make her slide! Weeee” (allow your little one to soak up the language since understanding comes before expressing) To make it expressive: 📚 Try the fill-in-the-blank strategy. “She is……”) These appear to be published in Ireland but thanks to Amazon, we have a few choices here in the USA 🇺🇸 😉 (see Amazon favorites!) I’ve rounded up a list of my favorite affordable apps that I like to use in therapy! ✨📲 Full disclaimer- the iPad isn’t my favorite thing to use in therapy, BUT- it can be super motivating and helpful when used as a tool ✨with✨ your child. Here is a list of some of my favorites: 🐄 PeekaBoo Barn is $1.99 📁 PECS Phase 3 is $5.99 (one of the cheapest customizable aac apps I know of with voice output.. a good starting point for home carryover in my opinion) 🐝 Articulation station is between $1.99-$7.99 per sound depending on the sound the child needs (r is most expensive) 👫The Social Bunch: Perspectives is $6.99 🐱 Homer - I have a link for a free 45 day trial in my profile! @learnwithhomer *affiliate link 📖 Vooks- you can try free for 7 days!! When using an educational app with a child in speech-language therapy, I make sure that I am holding the iPad so that I can use it as a tool with the child, pausing the games frequently so that they don’t get too tap happy without talking 😅 Also- I have ages 2+ due to the American Academy of Pediatrics stance on screen time. “AAP calls for no screen time at all for children until 18 to 24 months, except for video chatting, and says kids ages 2 to 5 should get an hour or less of screen time per day.” What apps does your child love? What do you use them to work on? Let’s chat & add some to the list! ⤵️ . . . . #kidlit #literacytips #bestbooksforkids #speechlanguagepathologist #earlyintervention #dailyparentingtips #speechdelaykids #parentingtipsandtricks #parentingsupport #instaparents #teachingkids #speechtherapist #parentingadvice #momtips #parentinghacks #lifeasmama #momstruggles #parentingwin #learnthroughplay #parentingtips #screentimetips #parentingtips101 #screentimelimits #screentimeforkids #educationalactivities #educationalapps
