Would you board down a Volcano? Easily one of the most unique travel adventures we’ve ever had, and many lists claim it as one of the most dangerous experiences on Earth (it’s really not, it just sounds super scary). We took to kids up to the top of the Cerro Negro Volcano, dresses them in these funky hazmat looking suits and let them go for it. the dust was intense, the crashes were painful, but the memory was incredible!! . . #nicaraguatravel #explorenicaragua #cerronegro #volcanoboarding #visitnicaragua #familyadventure

The night we camped on top of a volcano… Such a surreal experience... Hiking up to the edge of the crater of Telica Volcano was magical… Setting up camp on top was wild… Seeing the glowing magma below us at night was absolutely unreal… The camping gear? Smelled like it hadn’t been washed in 20 years 🤢 . . . #volcanocamping #nicaraguatravel #explorenicaragua #discovernicaragua #telica

Deserted beaches. There all over the place in Nicaragua. Sometimes we’ll show up and be the only ones there, and others we share with just a few people. There’s no doubt that travel in Nicaragua can be ROUGH, but if you’re willing to go without a few comforts, there are some incredible benefits!

This. Is. School. Decided it was time to dive head first into marine biology this winter. Best educational choice better. We used @thegoodandthebeautiful as our backbone, a few other fantastic books and LOTS of hands on experience, observation, and exploration. I’m guessing they’ll never forget what they saw and learned! . #handsonlearning #homeschoolscience #realeducation #marinebiologist

One of the biggest perks of slow travel is SO MUCH TIME TOGETHER! We’ve watched just about every sunset together and most sunrises too. Gosh, I love my people!

Why Nicaragua? So many reasons, but the short answer is SURFING! Our kids were dying to give surfing a go, and Nicaragua not only has great surfing, but is really affordable (especially important for a big family like ours). Board rentals were $10/day and lessons were just $30. Are we great surfers a couple of months in? No, but we’re better and have lots of fun, which feels great! . #familytravel #adventurefamily #surfingwithkids #groms

You know when you escape so that you can really SOAK THINGS IN, and you get so busy living in the moment that you forget to SHARE those memories? Yep, we’re at that spot. And I don’t feel bad about it! But, I do want our time in Nicaragua to have a place here, so get ready for a post overload. Because the memories have been too good to just keep to ourselves! . If there were one word to sum up our time in Nicaragua, it would be BEACHES! Soaked up so much beach time and it felt incredible. It was good enough that we aren’t even too Devos rated to be missing the most epic snow year back home!

Celebrating the one that makes our worlds go round today. Andrew’s the fun parent, the one that the kids can convince to do crazy things with them, and the one who’s always working hard behind the scenes to make our dreams come true. We love you like crazy and can’t wait to celebrate you all day today!

Some days look like this, but there’s a lot more that doesn’t make the highlight reel. . The early morning wake up calls to sneak in as much work as we can before the kids get up, learning to navigate new towns over and over again, juggling homeschool and remote learning for 5 kids, failed travel plans and so much more. . But we try and carve time out every day for play. That’s what we never regret. Slowing down and focusing, the real purpose behind this trip…and that makes all the work absolutely worth it!

Best way to explore Granada 🛶 . Granada is surrounded by 365 little islands, so we decided the best way to explore the area was by kayak, and it didn’t disappoint ONE BIT!!

People keep telling us “wow, you guys are living the dream” It’s in those moments that Andrew and I look at each other, with no words, and know that it’s beyond the dream. From the outside, our travels look like exciting locations, new adventures, and lots of time in the sunshine and in the water. But that’s just on the surface. We’ve been down this road before and we know where it’s going. When we lived out of our suitcases and traveled for a year in 2017-18, we learned that it’s so much more than just the location, but it’s more about the culture we’re building within our family. We’re living a life where the most certain thing is the relationships that we have with each other. And while we love the life that we have back home in Utah, we know that to really get where we want, we have to cut out some of the noise, so we can be fully present. While so much of the noise in our lives are good things, if you’re constantly surrounded by noise, how will you ever learn to grow in the silence. A life with less distraction, leads to more connection and that’s what we’re after on this trip. The beautiful locations are just a bonus!

Girls day out!!!!! I’m convinced that teens are THE MOST FUN EVER!! Honestly! She had the idea for a great adventure and I’m so glad I ignored my fear of heights and went along with her. Here, we’re about 2/3 of the way up the Mombacho Volcano, which is covered in jungle and these MASSIVE TREES. Such a cool experience here in Nicaragua! . . #nicaraguatravel #ziplineadventure #familyadventure #adventuregirls #adventuregirl

Must Have Gear For Spring Adventures

Not only do I love that they’re great quality, and will help his eyes while he’s competing, but I absolutely love how affordable they are (since I know at some point he’ll lose them). Since we’re all about versatility and multi-use gear in our house, we’re looking to Reima for some great options. They’re warm enough for cool days, resist dirt and water (yes, they work great in light rain), but they’re not super bulky. Currently, we’re using Helmet Flair on our ski helmets, and I’m happy to report that even after a few good crashes, the Flair stayed put, so we’re really impressed!

Skiing Solitude Utah With Kids: Everything You Need To Know

The mountains are incredibly accessible, only minutes outside of major cities, and that combined with amazing snow, fantastic ski terrain, and Utah’s famous ski deals, it’s one of the best places to plan a family ski vacation. wondering, our rules for letting kids ski alone are that they always have to stay together, wait at the bottom of every slope for everyone to catch up, tell us what lift they’ll be skiing, and they aren’t allowed to ski unknown tree trails or jump off cliffs without an adult (I seriously can’t believe I had to make that last rule Solitude starts private ski school for kids at age 4, and most years, group ski lessons at Solitude start at age 4, though in 2021, group ski school at Solitude is only available to kids ages 7 and up. To Know About Solitude Trying to help you make the most educated plans you can when you plan your Utah ski trip to Solitude, here are a few important things you need to know about the resort.

Rocky Mountain Winter Bucket List: 14 Must-Do Adventures

To learn more about skiing with kids, check out our new site, Skiing Kids that we designed to be the best family skiing resource available. Popular locations are Strawberry Reservoir Utah, Lake Granby Colorado, Brooks Lake Wyoming, Henrys Lake Idaho, Browns Lake Montana, and Cold Lake Alberta. To combine one of my favorite hot springs in Idaho — Sacajawea Hot Springs, — with a ski tour, ski up Forest Road 534/Grandjean Road from State Route 21 to the springs. Thankfully, many of the nearby trails like Johnston Canyon, Tunnel Mountain and Johnson Lake are all popular enough that the snow will be packed down making for relatively easy winter hiking in the rockies.
