I might feel like gluten is going to “get me” when I touch it AND I can remind myself of how it ACTUALLY works so I can anxiously take steps to stay safe. I can daydream about eating gluten and logically know it’s not a good idea and thus, avoid it. I can feel angry over the foods I can’t eat and know gluten-free versions are available. I’ve had celiac for 10+ years and I’m still afraid gluten is going to jump out and get me. Like a kid is afraid of monsters jumping out from under their bed and getting them… The truth is, as a highly anxious person, I’m not any less uncomfortable touching gluten… I’m just a lot better at working through the discomfort and reassuring myself that I know what I’m doing.
