A year ago today, the first case of #covid19 was diagnosed in the US. . . A week and a half ago, I received my second #FauciOuchie. By now, I should be at the height of immunity. . . For the first dose of the vaccine, all I felt was relief. I shed a few tears- relief that I was selected to get the vaccine, relief that we HAD a vaccine at this stage. . . But this time, when I cried? I cried tears of hope. We have a vaccine that WORKS. We will be expanding vaccinations to our essential workers and older patients. We have plans to expand vaccinations and encourage mask wearing until that happens. . . #ad Out of all things, 2020 has been The Year of the Kitchen. Since I’m a doctor in a hospital, I don’t get to work from home, so I didn’t have that major change in my life. There were no new hobbies or loaves of sourdough bread. There was, however, plenty of delicious food. We LOVE restaurants- we used to go out for sushi 1-2 times a week and attend monthly events with the James beard Foundation. We still order a decent amount of takeout (have to support my favorite places!) but I have honed my love of cooking and experimenting in the kitchen this year to recreate some of my restaurant favorites I haven’t been able to get. . . You might not guess it, but I was an AWFUL cook as a kid (though I could bake). I even ruined boxed macaroni and cheese! It wasn’t until med school that I realized I liked to cook. This year, I’ve tried to cook foods that I haven’t made in years- homemade pasta, risotto, mussels, and an abundance of Mexican food, as @doctorbabyp loves any taco, quesadilla, burrito, etc she can get her hands on. I also love making bigger recipes to drop off food to family in friends- it’s amazing how nice it is to see people from 15 feet away. . . A big family favorite? Enchiladas! I discovered @lamorenausa chipotle peppers and they are perfect in the mole recipe I was gifted from a family friend! The peppers have the perfect amount of spice, are a high quality, plus our toddler loves eating this for dinner. Even better- our recipe always makes enough to share with others, since who doesn’t love a home cooked meal? . . Did you have a theme to 2020? I got an excellent early #Christmaspresent yesterday. . . I got to get my first #covidvaccine. . . This year at work has, quite frankly, often sucked. As an internal medicine hospitalist, I usually have to deal with very sick patients or those who are dying. However, death has been ever present for us this year, and my patients die without their families (who many times may be dying in the room next door). . . . But, I finally have hope.
