Exit Plan (2018, Eric Terzo) … Wait—2018?

Co-written, produced, and directed by Eric Terzo, who doubles as my brother-in-law, Exit Plan is an 8-minute short that has recently been accepted to the 2018 New York Short Film Festival. Exit Plan is playing during the Festival's Short Block 12 at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, at the Cinema Village Theatre in Greenwich Village. Exit Plan is a dark comedy about suicide that Terzo sums up well in his Q&A over on Film Pulse: "There is humor in even our darkest of notions." If you'd like to hear more from Eric, here's an interview he did for Holly M. Eaton on the Some Say podcast

Interview with Ricardo Cortez Biographer Dan Van Neste

Dan Van Neste returns to Immortal Ephemera to talk about his most recent book, The Magnificent Heel: The Life and Films of Ricardo Cortez, published in 2017 by BearManor Media. They include the poor writer who becomes a pawn of the devil in The Sorrows of Satan (1926), the ruthless, womanizing private detective Sam Spade in the first screen adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s classic novel, The Maltese Falcon (1931), the crooked cardsharp who helps a parolee get back on her feet again in The House on 56th Street (1933), and the corrupt professional gambler who tries to go straight in Her Husband Lies (1937). There seem to be some major themes that I came to the book wanting to know more about and that you managed to answer, ie: Ricardo’s background as Jacob Krantz; his marriage to Alma Rubens; his personal and professional relationship with his now better known brother, cinematographer, Stanley; and Ricardo’s post-Hollywood life and career. Also especially intriguing to me, were behind-the-scenes details I learned regarding the productions of some important Cortez films like: The Pony Express, Torrent, The Maltese Falcon, Wonder Bar, and The Last Hurrah, his flirtation with directing, his success as an investor, later as a stockbroker, and his interest in men’s fitness and attire.

Movie Centenarians Updated as Baby Peggy Joins the List

Ever since I first put together my Movie Centenarians page in 2013, updating it with new members to the club has been one of my most enjoyable tasks. Well, as you're probably aware, a new member joins the list today, Diana Serra Cary, born October 29, 1918, and best known as Baby Peggy or Baby Peggy Montgomery from her film work of the early 1920s, has turned one hundred. When I went to work on the update Sunday, I was surprised that I hadn't touched the page since December 2016—I had been trying to update it on the actual date any new member joined the club, as I have for Baby Peggy, but I had missed a handful of new centenarians in the intervening twenty-two months. Besides Baby Peggy, you'll also find Marsha Hunt (1917— ), Danielle Darrieux (1917—2017), and Fay McKenzie (1918— ) newly added to the list.
