❤️My great-grandma Alice always told me “travel while you’re young because the older you get the harder it becomes to see the places you want to see.” She told me this ever since I was a little boy as she retold stories of her travels🗺️ I always wanted to see the world & always thought you had to "work hard & travel when you retire" And although my great-grandma lived to 98-years-old, the reality is that many of us won't have that option to live long enough to see the world if we wait, including myself. Life is too short to wait. My grandma was an inspiration to me and why I travel as much as I can. I've been travelling almost non-stop since 2017 (not-so-much in 2020 lol). Over the past 5 years, she saw me achieving my dreams & her dreams for me. And I think that's a beautiful thing. When I heard she was on her death bed, I dropped all my travel plans & flew home to be by her side up until the moment she passed away holding my hand. I will continue to travel & see the world because of her and for her. I will visit the places she never got the chance to visit. I will continue to travel up to the day where my body can no longer do it and inspire people to travel this beautiful world as my grandmother inspired me. 🌈It’s National Coming Out Day what was coming out like for you? Even though it’s been 8 gay years since I came out, I still find myself having to “come out” every week to someone I meet. For example, when I was flying to Eastern Europe, at passport control, I was asked “why are you visiting?” and I said “my partner” and he looked at me and said “oh girlfriend?” and I had to awkwardly come out and say “no boyfriend” as he looked at me with a confused look and then begin to process me quietly. I hate having to come out again and again since the first coming out was emotionally draining and took many years to build up the strength to do. And the fact that our community has to continue to come out constantly in a society that assumes we’re straight can be triggering and exhausting. So for this years national coming out day, I want to celebrate everyone’s courage and strength to not only come out once, but continue to come out regularly and be a visible representation that the world is not 100% straight and this societal norm of assuming needs to end. On a positive note, next time I passed by passport control and said I was visiting my partner, the officer said “girlfriend or boyfriend?” which is a simple verbal change yet a huge step forward for representation, equality and for us to feel more comfortable knowing they acknowledge that I could be in a relationship with girlfriend or boyfriend in today’s society. I went online to look for some help for freelancers in Canada during COVID-19 pandemic and google couldn’t find me clear answers on all the resources available to freelancers or people who have lost 50% or more of revenue. Every freelancer is in a different situation financially and as of April 14, 2020, unless you were earning $0 and/or lost your job because of COVID-19, you couldn’t qualify for the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) of $2000. Freelancers can apply through the CRA website or Service Canada (not both) for the $2000 CERB soon if they know they will not earn more than $1000 during the specific periods. This historic book store created the Emergency Survival Fund to raising money to support LGBTQ artists, freelancers, drag queens, performers, and tip-based workers who can’t get paid work right now and need financial support.
UPDATE: 3,000 stranded Canadians have been given free seats home thanks to Sunwing, including those in the Caribbeans, Mexico, Cuba, and Florida! If you’re a Canadian or Canadian permanent resident stuck in a city or country where Sunwing flies, they are offering free flights to you (if seats are available obviously). For Canadians in any Sunwing destinations who can’t get home or just can’t afford to come home (looking at certain airlines that jacked the price up during this time), Sunwing is offering free flight seats to Canadians and Canadian permanent residents if seats are available at no cost. If there are available seats prior to departure, available seats will be offered to Canadians free of charge 5.
