Milam & Greene Mockingbird Single Barrel Bourbon is named for the state bird of Texas which is medium sized with a big personality. Northern Mockingbirds, found throughout Texas year-round, are slender and gray with a long tail and a bold white stripe on each wing. Its signature trait is its ability to mimic the songs of other birds as well as environmental sounds. Mockingbirds use mimicry as a means of communication to attract mates, establish territory, and ward off potential threats. Mockingbirds are also known for their adaptability to diverse urban and rural habitats and resilience to harsh environmental conditions, like the barrels aging in Milam & Greene rickhouses experience in Texas. “Each release of our Wildlife Collection starts with the selection of excellent, young whiskey barrels, then applying my understanding of how the aging process will affect the final taste,” says Heather Greene, Milam & Greene Whiskey CEO and 2023 Master Blender of the Year. “By carefully studying the impact of the climate on aging whiskey, we better understand how the sense of place will be reflected in each of our barrels. We’ve compared whiskey that has aged its whole life in other states with whiskey completely aged in Texas. Whiskey aged 100 percent in Texas usually tends to be richer and darker. It's very robust, very spicy, and you can sink your teeth into it. By aging a barrel mostly in another state and then finishing its aging in Texas we’re getting richer, more intense flavor profiles at an earlier phase of its life. Mockingbird Single Barrel Bourbon was distilled in Tennessee with a mash bill of 84% corn, 8% rye, and 8% malted barley. It was barreled in Tennessee on March 8, 2016, where it was aged six years and seven months. It was then brought to Texas and aged a further year and four months in extreme drought and a once-in-a-generation ice storm on the north side of the Milam & Greene Rickhouse #2. Mockingbird Single Barrel Bourbon was bottled on February 6, 2024, at 128.21 proof or 64.1% alcohol by volume after aging for a total of seven years and eleven months. Mockingbird Single Barrel Bourbon has a burnt amber color and has delicious aromas of glazed donuts, brown sugar, dark berries, tobacco, and old leather. Mockingbird greets the palate with a full oily mouthfeel, and deep flavors of cherry cola, toffee, sweet cornbread, and tannic oak. Fading rims, sloughing legs thin but syrupy. 👃: Roasted corn and a touch of acetone. Lots of barrel char, almost like a heavy char (but done better *cough cough*), moderate smokiness throughout. Caramel corn, more caramel than corn. Proof in both flavor and feeling. 👅: Fresh sweet corn from the farmer’s market, griddled corn cakes in butter. The proof is there and well-controlled, giving heat under the tip of my tongue. Cotton candy, reminding me of scents from a state fair. Slightly burnt caramel. Mouthfeel is silky, light side of medium, and pleasantly coating. Flavor and heat stay on the front half of my tongue. 🏁: The fresh farmstand corn takes over from the roasted kernels, bright and juicy, no hint of mashing or fermentation - pure grain flavor. A mild astringency opens up at the end of a medium-length finish. Overall: The freshness of the corn with the dark, smoky caramel makes a lovely pairing that drives you to take another sip. Mature far beyond its age statement without ever letting the oak be more than a backbone. Heaven Hill Distillery Announces the Release of the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond 25th Anniversary Edition This edition is just the third release in the VVS (Very Very Special) line of the Decanter Series BARDSTOWN, Ky. (April 2, 2024) – Today Heaven Hill announced the release of the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond 25th Anniversary Edition commemorating the anniversary of Heaven Hill acquiring the historic Bernheim Distillery (DSP-KY-1) in Louisville, Ky and along with it the Old Fitzgerald brand. Comprised of 13-year-old barrels, this edition ushers in the latest release to the decanter series and adds to Heaven Hill Distillery’s bottled-in-bond legacy. After the catastrophic fire at the Old Heaven Hill Springs Distillery in November 1996, Heaven Hill acquired the Bernheim Distillery in Louisville in April 1999. The barrels used for this release were produced in September 1999, emptied in March 2013 and bottled in February 2024. When these barrels were tested in 2013, it was decided that the taste profile at 13 years old was exceptional and the profile would be reserved for a special occasion, such as this 25th Anniversary Edition. Thirteen is also a lucky number for Heaven Hill, as the company filled its first barrel ever on December 13, 1935. “The Bernheim Distillery became the lifeblood of Heaven Hill after the setback from the fire and has been ever since,” said Executive Chairman Max Shapira. “We are honored to have been able to continue the Old Fitzgerald legacy since that time and look forward to many more years of exceptional releases from Bernheim Distillery and from the Heaven Hill Springs Distillery set to open early next year.” The Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Decanter Series is comprised of three types of releases: Spring, Fall and VVS. This special edition is denoted by a maroon label. Since 2018, there have only ever been two other VVS releases, including VVS 2018 14-year-old and VVS 2020 16-year-old. The 2024 edition will be available in the 750ml size on an allocated basis as an exclusive Kentucky release to select retailers and the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience in Bardstown, Ky. It meets the strict requirements of a bottled-in-bond: the product of a single distillery from a single distilling season, aged a minimum of four years, and bottled at 100 proof or 50% alcohol by volume. This edition is available at the suggested retail price of $229.99. The liquid within this release of the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Decanter Series bares a bright burnished copper color, with a rich and warm nose of cinnamon toast followed by nutmeg and allspice with sweet oak notes. On the palate rich honey and vanilla sweetness are balanced by notes of baking spices. The finish is soft and warm with hints of oak and a gentle peppery finale. The legendary Old Fitzgerald line is well-known for its distilling pedigree and intriguing story behind its namesake, John E. Fitzgerald, whose legacy is also heralded by the Larceny Bourbon brand. The oak trees from this forest have been used to make barrels for centuries and have housed some of the finest Bordeaux wines ever made. The Forest of Tronçais was originally overseen by the Duke of Bourbon (foreshadowing its use in Explorer) and was later planted with oak trees by Louis XIV to supply timber for the French navy. The Tronçais region was also home to early European troubadours whose musical traditions of merging melodies and poetry ultimately migrated to the Appalachian Mountains - which became the heart of America’s singer-songwriter tradition. The American Oak staves used in the first Explorer release come from those same Appalachian Mountains, where cooler conditions lead to slower growth and a tighter grain. This collection proves that for whiskey, this isn’t flyover country. It’s a region that has its own character, ethos, and sense of place. So many of these distillers are farmers or are close to their grains. The climate is unlike anywhere else in the country, allowing for classic heat-driven aging but also plenty of cooler-climate oxidization in the spirit. The results are spectacular.
