Does anyone else repackage their freeze dried meals like this? It definitely saves a lot of space, especially in a bear can. You can safely add boiling water to a Ziploc brand FREEZER quart bag and let sit for the usual 10/15 min to rehydrate. I am not the biggest fan of single use plastics, (I mean, is anyone?) so I only typically do this for long trips to save room. (Don’t forget to still @terracycle your empty @mtnhouse packet!) As always, pack out your trash - what you bring in with you, take it out (and more if you find anything along the way!) @Ziploc freezer bags are free of dioxins and BPAs which means they are safe to consume from. The product meets the safety and quality requirements of the FDA for toxicity, chemicals, and melting properties. A week ago today we hobbled into Harper’s Ferry sweaty, hungry and exhausted. I thought for sure I would cry tears of disbelief walking into this historic little town that marks the Appalachian Trail’s “non-halfway halfway point” - but instead I cried in relief 😂 we both had just backpacked the most miles in the shortest amount of days we’d ever done, in 100° weather. I really thought I “Georgia’d” my feet, but it was only half as bad. (In reference to the 50 mile section I did in Georgia, also in the heat, where just the balls of my feet became so bruised and blistered from the sweat and the pounding on the rocks I couldn’t walk for days.) I’m so proud of this accomplishment and my first AT state completed. Being a section hiker is hard in a different way. I can only get out there a few times a year so with the hundreds of miles we have to drive and all the planning that goes into it, my feelings get put on the wayside. I feel a lot of things post trip. Today, 4 miles before we finished our 40 mile section hike from PenMar Park to Harper’s Ferry. I cried a few times out of frustration and discomfort on this trip, it was so unbearably hot. The humidity was extreme. Ugh. Minus that element, the last few days on trail were perfection. Really, really hard. But absolute perfection. Maryland is a phenomenal section. I haven’t had time to really process it all yet but I’ll release a blog post when I do. Because while I was trying to research this section of trail I couldn’t find ANYTHING, as far as what to expect or trail reports so I thought I’d put my experience out in the universe. Today’s 4th of July was spent in one of my favorite places, Gettysburg PA. We watched a tense reenactment of the Wheatfield battle. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t moved. Somewhere in my 30s I became a Civil War nerd. This has been on my bucket list for years and I’m so stoked I was able to come to Gettysburg twice this year, and experience a battle reenactment.
